2005 will be a very good year

Frog and I decided that 2004 would be "l'année des changements" and it was... sold patterns, got married... isn't that enough?! So I have decided that 2005 will be a very good freakin' year DAMMIT! I'm just hoping it starts out on a better note than 2004. I'm not a big fan of going out and drinking on New Year's. I'm more of the stay home and eat candy and watch crappy TV school of New Year's so Frog and I decided to do that. I was putting on my shoes so we could go pick up some pizza and then my eye itched and I scratched it. Not just the eyelid. I put my finger in my eye, by accident of course, and howled in pain. The next morning my eye was swollen and hurt a lot and I was getting sick to my stomach from the pain. I couldn't move my eye. We went to the eye hospital and it turned out that I had ripped my cornea. It hurt terribly to move my right eye and you can't move your left eye without moving your right so I spent 3 days in bed sleeping and keeping my eyes closed and asking Frog to read to me so I wouldn't die of boredom. Then I spent a week or two walking around with sunglasses since any light was way too much light. I'm a little skittish today because I'm convinced I will poke my eye out or stab myself with a knitting needle or something. I'm determined to at least get through January without severe bodily harm. Wish me luck.
I wish I had good stuff to show you, but I'm being really lazy. I've been sleeping. I'm so happy that I'm sleeping that I don't give a damn that I'm not getting anything done. I've been swatching an idea for a new pattern but I haven't gotten very far. I'm too busy trying to ignore the voices in my head that are telling me all the things I should be doing to be productive. The only productive thing I have done is make turkey noodle soup from scratch and help Frog with his web site. Three more days of laziness and then I go back into efficiency mode.

For those of you who asked, here's the info about my socks:
I used 1 skein of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Lucky Stripe knit on size US 1 / 2.25mm dpns from the toe up. I knit one sock up to the ankle from each end of the ball and then divided what was left in 2 and knit the rest trying to use up every last bit of yarn. They're not as snug as I would like, but they're nice.
I've promised some socks to Frog's uncle. He has really big feet, so I'd like to use something thicker than the Shepherd Sock. If anyone has any brilliant suggestions for a thicker yarn that will hold up well (and has appropriate colors) for a guy who is a retired truck driver and spends his time chopping wood and doing outdoorsy, farmy things, I'd really appreciate your ideas. I really want something thicker and not terribly expensive because, like I said, he has really big feet and I don't want these socks to take me forever and cost a bundle. I would like them to be nice, though.

A happy, safe and healthy new year's to all. and don't poke your eye out.

Happy New Year to you! Mayhaps you need some soft mittens knit up for safe eye noodling. Those socks are lovely, by the way!

hope you feel better and to the best in the new year!

Yow!! Have a happy new year and keep your hands away from your eyes!

Sweetie, only use your knuckle when "scratching" your eyes!!!
Totally machine washable, thicker sock yarn: http://www.wollywood.de/stricken/coats/regia/body.html - regia 6- and 8-ply. I recently used black 8-ply to make a rippin' ready sweater for my dirt biking nephew, lol. Should be indestructible.
Thank you sooo much for that Gothamist blog, I am going to New York at end of February, and need stuff like that!

Ow ow ow ow ow - as someone who can barely see to find her glasses on the bedside table, the thought of eye injuries freak me out! I'm glad your eye is healing!
We've just returned home from our New Years celebrations and, having been the sober driver who drank too much coffee, I'm now wide awake and sitting here thinking about the changes I want/need to make in 2005! Like going to bed early - geez, it's almost 3am!

Here's to the changes of 2005! La plus ca change...

Hey, did you get by with only one skein of Lorna's Laces? What size (US) feet are you? My feet are narrow, but long and I'm wondering if I can get by on one skein. Thanks!

I just made my knitaphobe husband some macho boot socks using the lorna's laces worsted weight fast. easy peasy. it comes in a color called chino. It's the shepherd worsted. super wash. or you could use the shepherd sport weight. it will cost less. You always make me laugh. what a nice gift. thank you. nancy

Corneal Abrasion = sucky few weeks. Here's to an eye-injury free 2005! Happy New Year!

Oh, jeeze, I scratched my cornea once and I agree, it's some of the worst pain you can imagine and every time your eye moves you end up flinching in pain.

Anyway, this will be a great year and I can't wait to see your brilliant patterns everywhere.

Oh, ouch...I hope you have a quick recovery from that! happy new year to you and your family!

i'm with you on how to spend new year's eve (minus the severe eye pain and trip to the ER, of course!).

have a wonderful 2005!

It's all fun and games 'till somebody loses an eye...
I did a similar thing two days before my wedding. Luckily whatever damage I did was limited enough that if I squinted a bit, I could see just fine--well enough to know that I married the same person to whom I said yes in the first place, anyway.
Go, Fred, Go...the crappy TV here is better :-)

I just knit two pair of socks for men who work hard and the word "handwash" is not in their vocabulary. I made them out of Lion Brand Wool Ease. One of the pairs was for a man with size 14 feet and they only took me about 10-15 hours total knitting or so.

I have made socks with Encore Worsted, which holds up great since it is washable (and gulp...part acrylic), and very cheap...the other ones were in Cascade 220 and those are nice and warm...Happy New Year Kate...I am sending you positive no bodily harm kind of vibes....

Happy new year to you and the frog, keep those knitting needles FAR from your face, you never know. ;) Hopefully 2005 will be a year of even bigger changes and you'll get to meet a few knitters from Montreal. ;)

Oh my. I'm so sorry to hear that. 2005 cannot help but be better. Staying home and eating junk and watching crap TV is a very worthy thing to do on new year's eve. We'll be going to a party, though. Did the staying in the last six years running. We'll see if we've been missing out. Doubt it.
All the very best in the comin year and stop being so hard on yourself. xxxooo

Posted by: valentina at December 31, 2004 03:20 PM

kate--so sorry to hear about your eye! and what better way to welcome in the new year than sleeping and lazing about? hope you feel better soon and maybe you should invest in safety goggles for your knitting LOL!

Posted by: amanda at December 31, 2004 02:42 PM

ouch, sounds so painful. glad your eye is better. think you're contributing to my new sock aspirations. i just love your latest. i'll have to try that lorna's laces one day.

wishing you all the best in 2005!
