loose ends
I was desperately searching for a ball of soysilk today and looked EVERYWHERE. I realized I had about a thousand little bags full of yarn so I decided to organize everything. And inspired by Monica I decided to make the closest thing I could to a spreadsheet to keep track of it. I don't have any spreadsheet programs, but I faked it. And I found the soysilk.

This stuff still needs to be catalogued. Maybe next weekend.
I rediscovered that I have loads of single balls of stuff. I'm going to have to make a lot of hats or psychadelic squares afghans or something. I will no longer buy single balls. REALLY! or if I do, I solemnly swear use them to test and swatch very quickly. I just keep thinking What if I have to move this stuff?!

Well I stumbled onto a comment about your pattern for "Gifted" mittens. I would love more info.
How can I get the info??? The picture on this page is fabulous bare tree and all.

If you lived down the street, I'd take it all off you. I have fantasies of making all kinds of crazy Fair Isle stuff. But no sweaters. Bags and pillows and above all throws. I'd only make patches and sew them together. Like someone said, use the single skeins for packing material and then hand them over to me! ;-)

Wow! Suddenly my stash seems small....

Look at it this way. If you buy in sweater quantities, you'll have fifteen times the amount of yarn. My advice? Keep buying the single balls. Yarn makes good packing material.

Wow! very impressive cataloguing achievement. I moved my stash a couple of years ago, but it's grown some since then. I keep thinking I should organize it, but then I'd have to admit how big it actually is.... :-)

There seems to have been a lot of organizing going on - I did the same. And sadly, I have lots of single balls, but I also have lots of whole sweaters just waiting to get knitted up. Did you calculate your total yarn yardage (or mileage)? It's a sobering number.

I advocate the space vacuum bag as well, especially for moving all that stuff to Montreal. Once there, you can decorate with them, I'm sure there are lots of ways to display yarn so you'll always see them, as a reminder not to buy more, or finish more projects. (Or send them to me for "safekeeping", ha ha)

Happy New Year, Kate! I think you'll definitely have to bring that yarn wherever you go - it will help when you are writing new patterns. :)

WHEN you move, remember yarn makes good reusable packing material. I like LeeAnn's idea about the vacuum packing thingie : you'd be amazed at how much air is taking up space.

If you don't want to move that yarn, you can always ship it to me!

YAY for you! Thank you for the inspiration. I organized my yarn, but didn't think of the 'spreadsheets.'
:)

I swore not to buy single balls of yarn any more after I found that I also had a lot in my stash. I'm probably going to be knitting a lot of hats for charity!

Wow, I am very impressed. The organization! This definitely looks like a late-night project. Now you can get a good look at your yarn and make sure to know what you NEED before your next trip to the yarn store.

I can't imagine what I'd rediscover if I went through all my stuff. I need to organize all my things too.

well aren't you clever! way to go!
if you're running out of space i'll take whatever's in that le bon marché bag ...

I didn't talk to her at her 1 in the morning, no sirreee, wasn't me...
And what do you mean, "What If" you have to move the yarn? Of course you have to move the yarn! Montréal is waiting for you, lady! Get one of those space vacuum thingies, do a little yarn liposuction, stick the resulting capsule-to-be-knitted in a suitcase and off you go :-)

Did any of this cataloguing happen in, say, oh, the middle of the night? [whistles nonchalantly...] ;-)

So what if you have to move. You'll have yarn that you love, and that's priority, right?
