multiplying like... bunnies

Spring must be in the air because I keep seeing bunnies. Like these and this one (on March 1) and another and a blue one (on Jan. 25) and this cutie and this one in the wild

I figured I would put some bunny hints out there for any of you who happen to be making them. If you aren't making bunnies, stick your tongue out at my blog, roll your eyes and then scroll down to "Did you know"

  • Black is a hard color to use for the embroidery. Nearly everyone who mentioned mean bunny faces used black to make the mouth and I'm convinced that one has something to do with the other.
  • Don't understuff!
  • Go down a needle size or two to get a nice, tight fabric if you have to. You don't want the stuffing to show through, do you? I know I specified a size, but who cares. It's a bunny. You aren't going to wear it.
  • It's easier to do the embroidery before the head is completely stuffed and sewn up. I stuffed mine a little, sewed on the face and then finished stuffing and sewed up the back.
  • I apologize for not getting the info up on my site for the backwards loop cast on. I promise I'll do it as soon as I can bribe Frog to take photos for me. In the mean time, there's good info here (Scroll down)
  • That's all I can think of for now, but I'll add things as I think of them.

Did you know that in France they say that on Easter morning bells fly out of the churches in Rome and come to France to hide eggs and leave candy for children? Yes. Bells. Like the things that go ding dong. What's even better is that they are bells with wings. That's right. Huge, heavy, metal bells with little cartoony wings that fly and somehow gently pick up eggs and hide them in bushes and leave giant Kinder Eggs and Lindt Bunnies (but very sadly no peeps or jelly beans). I mean, a rabbit hiding eggs is a pretty stupid idea, but at least it's a living breathing animal that can move because it wants to. Bells? Really! I don't care if they are magic bells from Vatican City! What do they take us for, ding dongs? Excuse me for the extremely lame joke. It's time for bed. Anyway, the point of this rambling is, Frog keeps saying I should knit a bell. The only cloche I would like to knit is one that could go on my head. And it wouldn't have wings.

PS It was Blossom who wrote the last entry in case you didn't notice. She claims she's going to buy yarn this weekend. We'll see! Since my blog seems pretty devoid of concrete knitting content, maybe I'll let her jump in and show us what she picked out for herself.

Hi. I'm delurking to thank you for the Bunny pattern, it's wonderful. Having great fun knitting it up as a baby gift for a friend. Currently I'm adjusting my knitting budget to buy more of your FAB patterns. Thanks for putting them out there. Anyway, enough with the flattery, Easter Bells? Delivering candy? Sounds more like a nightmare to me.

    the silly american,

Esquire Magazine has many of David Sedaris' articles online. So does NPR!

ah, how the lies of our childhoods vary. :)

i LOVE Frog's bunny illustration. it's soulful, quirky, smart, yet so adorable!

How do they carry the eggs? At least bunnies have arms with paws. Bells just have . . . metal parts.

Hey, don't knock the bells. Seriously. I mean, you crazy Americans open your Christmas presents late (the 25th, instead of the 24th).

BTW - I first thought your bunny reference had to do with...well...I guess you're not pregnant, heh? :)

Huh. I heard that the French bells go to Jerusalem for a long weekend--you know how they're silent on Good Fri/Holy Sat--and on their way home they bring souvenirs to the kiddies. Surely I didn't just make that up....

Hadn't heard that Easter bell story. Very funny.

This will be our first Easter in Paris. Perhaps, I'll tell my children that the Easter Bunny wears a bell...

Frenchfry says somebody must have been smoking some pretty strong dope when they thought of that bell story...he knew about the famous bell-with-wings picture but didn't realize it was linked with the Kinder-Egg flyby...

We have Kinder Eggs AND peeps AND jelly beans AND Lindt bunnies in Montréal. :-) (hint hint hint)

Be warned, though, that the result of all this bounty is a plethora of little plastic toys underfoot and a totally sugar-boosted husband and kid to accidentally step on said plastic toys as they speed up and down the hallway alternately laughing maniacially and arguing over who gets the plastic computer mouse with the eyes.

bisoux :-) (and yes, we have three bunnies)

I don't remember the bells, even though I lived with a family with small children... But I do remember that it was the biggest candy consumption holiday, bar none -- as high as American Easter and Halloween. I have never seen so much chocolate and praliné.

hahahaha, bells flying and leaving eggs. I love it. ;-)

That sounds pretty ridiculous about the bells. I think I might need a cloche hat, now that you mention it...

p.s. I would gladly trade you some Peeps and jelly beans for some giant kinder eggs. ;)

I immediately thought of the David Sedaris essay, too. It's called "Jesus Shaves." He is talking about being in a beginner French class--in France--and the students, from many nations, are trying to explain Easter to a Muslim student, all in their very basic French. And then he (as the American) is trying to explain the Easter bunny, and all the other people think he is crazy.
You can actually listen to it at:

All of the bunnies are fab. I haven't knit any of them yet, but I have been experimenting with needle-felting a few bunnies. It's that time of year.

david sedaris in "me talk pretty some day" (i think) talks about the easter bells in one of his stories that take place in france. it is hilarious.
