THE EXCUSE
If you ever want to be a lazy piece of crap and have your way all the time, I have found THE EXCUSE. Here's a list of things THE EXCUSE has allowed me to do in the past few weeks:
WARNING: THE EXCUSE can cause side effects such as:
Nausea (really often), vomitting (only twice, thankfully), weepiness for no decent reason, the realization that bread is completely disgusting, as is spinach and any other overly cooked vegetable or anything that could be qualified as slimey, squooshy or smelly, the receiving of unwanted advice, shock, excitement (and sometimes fear) and a baby of unknown sex towards the end of November.

Congratulations! I love how you call him the tadpole. I just had an ultrasound last week and my DH has been calling the babe "the turtle".

Dear Kate...I figured out the excuse before I was halfway through with the list of bad behaviors! Pregnancy is pretty much the only explanation for a man being so tolerant and patient when his wife gets hormonal and cranky!
Posted by: sue at April 26, 2005 08:28 PM
Congratulations, Kate, to you and Frog and the little tadpole too. Take good care of everyone, yourself especially, and all will go well for the three of you. I'm so happy for you.

Thanks ladies (and gents?) for your nice notes and thoughts. :) I'm sorry to admit I didn't read ALL of them though yet, but be sure I will.
Kate, seeing the tadpole moving its lil arms and legs this morning is something I will never forget. When we both yelled and laughed and nearly cried in surprise as it did it, I really was in heaven. This Excuses all that you mentioned, by far.
I love you both, my sweet babies!

Congratulations!
You'll have to keep us posted with "Having a baby in France" posts (a idea that always causes panic attacks in me).
Posted by: Anna at April 26, 2005 05:23 PM
Congrats. The first trimester really can be hard. I was sick as a dog but didn't want to tell anyone why. Second tri is better. I know about the craving thing. The only food I wanted was Peterson's nut bars, which are not available in the south, only in the west and north in the US. That and tomatoes, which were of course out of season and very expensive. Best of luck!!
Posted by: Meriah at April 26, 2005 05:20 PM
Wonderful news, Kate - congratulations! Let the baby knitting begin (when you're feeling better)! Your little one will be the best-dressed baby in all of France. Best wishes for a healthy and comfortable pregnancy.
Posted by: Sarah at April 26, 2005 05:17 PM
Wow! I'm so excited for you! I never had morning sickness but I did have to spend the last trimester of my first pregnancy on bed rest. Secretly bed rest sounded like a great vacation idea but after the first few days I realized laying in bed all day actually hurts! Here's my bit of unasked for advice: Peppermint tea for nausea and ginger for upset tummy and fennel for bloating.
Posted by: stephanie at April 26, 2005 05:15 PM
AHhhhhhhhhh!!!! Congratulations!
Peppermint tea helped my morning sickness.

Congratulations! I'm so excited for you. I've worked in an infertility clinic for five years so you'd think I'd be past gooshing over babies by now...hasn't happened yet. Please send me your snail mail address (if you don't mind correspondence from total strangers). I really want to make something for him/her.

Oh, I forgot (and I hope this doesn't make you nauseous), in regard to food, I haven't had french onion soup, once one of my faves, in over 20 years (Katie's fault)... It sounded good when I ordered it that time, but when it was set before me, it was a completely different story!

Aha! No wonder you haven't been working on things - you've been working on something else! It's exhausting, which one wouldn't expect somehow, with it being so small yet and all. With both of mine, I went to sleep the first three months, woke up for the middle three, then slept again (when I could get comfortable enough) for the last three. Um, then you don't get to sleep much at all for a while, but we shouldn't think about that yet. Looking at the dates, if your apartment gets hot, you will probably need a portable air conditioner. See, more advice! (sorry) Congratulations!
Posted by: patti at April 26, 2005 04:09 PM
Aha! I had a feeling as soon as I saw "THE EXCUSE" in all caps. Congratulations, my dear! Wonderful news.

HOLY GUACAMOLE!
Congratulations. Let me tell you, that is going to be one adorably dressed tadpole.
Posted by: Marnie at April 26, 2005 04:06 PM
Wonderful! Hoep your barfing isn't so bad (I had bad barfing). I used gingersnaps and seasickness bands to help the nausea (and no, they did not help. Nothing helped except perscription non-barfing medicine that mostly just made me sleep.) Be nice to yourself--we're all cheering for you and the Frog too!
Posted by: s at April 26, 2005 03:58 PM

You Rock, Mama!!! (and pretty soon you won't puke while you're rocking...)
And you SO WILL get up in front of a bunch of parents and dance to Wipeout. Tadpole will never forgive you if you wimp out on that one...or if you make Frog do it, trust me, it will take a minimum of two weeks for you to look him in the eye without snorting green tea out your nose...
I didn't say you had to LIKE dancing to Wipeout in front of a bunch of parents, however. Get real. ;-) That's like saying you have to wear the macaroni necklaces...oh, wait, you actually DO have to...nevermind. :-) Congratitations, Feliculations, and a very big, inappropriately long hug to you!

To be honoust: I had a feeling, because i'm a frequent reader/fan of your blog, there were unreadable signs that points in the directions of a little miracle!
But maybe its because I have a (second) little wurm inside of me (23 weeks now).

Congratulations! Trust me the nasty physical stuff gets better in the 2nd trimester. And then you head into the third (where I am now) and you begin to nest like crazy and you MUST knit itsy bitsy little things that they will only wear once, but you must!

Yes, you said it right too - "the receiving of unwanted advice", it seems to some that being preggie gives folks the okay to give unsolicited advice AND their personal horror stories. You take good care - Terry in SF
