the secret to happiness and health
First, thanks: Thanks to all of you for your sweet comments and being excited for us. We never expected to have soooooo many nice notes. Frog is the best isn't he? You saw his comment, right? Tadpole has already got a shining star hat (it's the periwinkle one I made in calmer a while back) but he/she's going to have to be patient for other handknits because I'm just too tired and busy to get to leisure knitting right now.
Second, a small temper tantrum: It's not fair! I'm missing Yarn Harlot (you know who she is so I'm not bothering to link) in NY today. Blossom is going. I wish I could do something knitterly with Blossom, like go knit socks and listen to the Harlot or help her pick out yarn for her next project... or screw knitting! I just want to hang out with my friends and eat bagels and drink cream soda dammit!
Third, an announcement: A lot of you guys have seen Lee Ann in the comments, non? Well, she's finally got a blog so go and check her out.
Last, but not least, the secret to happiness and health: I have been feeling pretty assy (if you'll excuse the term) and tired instead of glowing or whatever I'm supposed to be doing. I had absolutely no choice but to go to work today so I did and on my way home, I had a choice. Either, I took the shorter route or I took the slightly longer, more boring one and hopefully the best bakery in the world was open. I say the best bakery in the world because it is in many ways. The people are super nice and they make this awesome organic bread and you totally get the feeling that these are people who love what they are doing and I Iove that. Their cakes aren't that great and there are no pastries but their bread is just amazing. They aren't open loads and half the bakeries in my neighborhood are on vacation right now so I didn't want to take the long, boring way for nothing, but my upset, growling stomach led me towards the bakery and they were open. I bought an organic whole wheat boule, some speculos for me, some sablés for Frog and when I went to pay, I saw a basket of rasperry beignets (donuts). I had to have one. Yes, I'm in France, Yes, they are supposed to know how to bake, but a lot of the bread is just blah, honestly and I've never really had a beignet that I thought was great. But I bought one. It was fan-freaking-tastic. My stomach ache went away and this afternoon I have felt pretty darned good. Good enough to vacuum and resist the magnetic pull of my bed. So there it is. The secret to happiness and health is a good raspberry jelly donut. I swear. You can thank me later.
PS My apologies for the continuing lack of knitting content. My ongoing pregnancy coma combined with the projects that I am knitting for deadlines rather than for fun leaves me with not a heck of a lot to show. Plus, looking at the number of comments that I have gotten on knitting vs. non-knitting posts leaves me with the impression that you guys are just as happy to read about me being knocked up, my haircuts and green shoes (that give me terrible blisters by the way). I'll try to prove that I'm a knitter some time soon.

Congratulations!!! Don't worry about not feeling the "glow" yet, it didn't really kick in for me until the 3rd trimester. Everyone was telling me how great I was looking and all I could think about was "If I eat now will it stay down?" The tiredness does go away, you will feel the glow, and the bundle at the end makes EVERYTHING worth while!!!

Baby! I'm so happy for you!
P.S. If you happen to be in Nashville, I will be happy to teach your birth class for you - I teach them for the midwives here. ;)
Write me if you need anything!

Hi, I have made so many misstakes reading your blog and trying to knit lace at the same time, ;) .
I just want to say I enjoy reading it and if no one else hase given you a tip for yarn to knit the kilt socks in, why not try Opal? It's thin and soft and durable. but of course not pure wool.
And, I like the Clepotis shawl. Have not knitted it but its in my mind just have to find the yarn...

You ARE glowing, you just don't know it yet. It consumes your consciousness, it consumes your waking hours, it consumes your hopes and dreams, in a way that knitting never could. The puking will pass.

The fact that you are blogging at all is amazing to me. All I could manage early on in my first pregnancy was sleeping and rotting my brain with a crappy Anne Rice novel. I also read The Stand by Stephen King, which I would NOT recommend for a pregnant woman.

Ugh, why do the cutest shoes always do the worst slice-up job on feet? You've got to get some slip-on New Balance sneakers. They might not be the trendiest thing in town, but boy are the comfy! Mine actually have mold growing in them and I still can't take em off, but that's another story...

Congratulations on your excuse! The tiredness passes. I didn't have any other 'side-effects', just unbelievable exhaustion for the first three months but after that it was fine. So hang in there!

Well, Kate, I've told you before, but I want to tell you again... I am so happy for you. You are going to be such a cute Mommy.

hey, this is totally your time to be the Queen of Everything. no apologies necessary. raspberry beignets -- good times. i missed the harlot, but i hear it was clapotis city.

I was barely functioning the first few months of my pregnancies with the fatigue and morning sickness (well all day sickness). You're blogging and working and writing in complete sentences--you're doing fantastic in my book!
Congratulations!

The Yarn Harlot is not coming here to Montréal, either...if I want to see the best Canadian knitblogger ever, I have to go to the States. Go figure. (I am seriously plotting to get the kid out of school and take a roadtrip to Essex Junction in Vermont to see Steph.) Re: glowing...I never glowed. You don't have to glow. It's okay not to glow. Your mother-in-law will probably worry if you don't glow. Tell her to add that to her list. (She's got a list, doesn't she...) And while she's at it, pass the donuts. ;-)
Thanks for telling the world I'm online now with the blog--it was really sweet of you to post that. You da bomb :-)

First of all congratulations. I'm so happy for you. The fatigue gets better in the second trimester, just hang on.
I saw the Harlot last night at L & T it was great but most importantly for you, the room was full of Clapotis. Really! I took a picture with 3 other women wearing theirs, a woman at my table was wearing it and there were half a dozen in between. I got a ton of compliments on mine (including Stephanie herself) so I was feeling pretty good myself.

A belated CONGRATS! Wow. Yay!
Posted by: Rachael at April 29, 2005 02:02 PM
Congratulations to you both, the coma feeling will soon pass, eat whatever makes you feel good and sleep lots.
Posted by: yvette at April 29, 2005 01:41 PM
You might as well live in Paris, Texas. Cause she ain't going there either. If she was I would get there somehow (I'm in Waco). But we can dream of what it would have been like to be at L&T in NYC.
Keep following your tummy and it will guide you to whatever is necessary to feel better. Weird things are sometimes the answer.

Kate - CONGRATULATIONS! And hopefully that coma will pass. I'm currently 14 weeks and mine started lifting at about 10 weeks or so. Here's to a happy and healthy pregnancy!

I sooooooooo hear you about the doughnut. I'm still looking for a perfect Berliner. Nice yeasty dough, jam (don't care what kind) and most importanlty: sprinkled with GRANULATED sugar. Haven't found it yet in NYC. Dunkin Donuts is crap. Some of the independends almost get it. Donut Plant is good, but they're not yeasty. Eh.
I'm wearing Clapotis as well tonight at the Harlot do. I'm betting lots of others will, too. Will send pics. And I'll think of you. Care to point out Blossom?
Oh, and blog about what ever you damn well feel like.

Oh, just keep on blogging about anything. It's great fun reading about your adventures knitting or not.
Can I eat a jelly doughnut if I'm a grandmother and not have an excuse?

From what I understand, the assy part of pregnancy lasts for at least the 1st trimester. The glow comes later. You'll get there. Oddly enough, you probably don't see the glow that others do because you are feeling hormonal and assy. Hang in, the glow is coming!

You must be so frazzled with all the news, its okay that knitting hasn't been the top priority list! I am still so excited for you! Take it easy, relax and eat lots of yummy food!
Posted by: Dani at April 28, 2005 06:38 PM
I think you mentioned your blog entries that have received the most comments - green shoes, etc. but yesterday's tops them all right? I'll keep the donut remedy in mind as I'm sure I'll need it.

Hopefully you will come out of the pregnancy coma by the second trimester. Of course by the third trimester you will be so sick of only being able to sleep for an hour and a half before you have to get up to pee that you will be wishing for the coma! :)

Kate -- When the Yarn Harlot comes here in August, I'm so going and then I'm going to mail you pictures because I'm just that way (I'm such a brat!). You just made me hungry for pastries in France. And CHEESE! and WINE! OK I need to go back (or at least dream about it)
Posted by: Rebecca at April 28, 2005 05:13 PM
Well, I'm going to see the Yarn Harlot tonight, and I'm bringing my Clapotis-in-progress and my friend is wearing hers, so you'll kind of be present through your work... Enjoy your raspberry jelly donuts!
