lame layette?

Whenever anyone hears that I'm a knitter, they look at my belly and say, "Ooooh, you must have knitted a beautiful layette for your baby." And I have to say, "Uh... actually, no. I've been kind of busy sleeping and eating moving and working." Even my mother-in-law, who knows how crazy things have been, keeps asking me what I've created for la bi-biche. When we found out I was pregnant back in March, I knit this:

My usual model, Tom my doll-daughter, is in a box on a boat somewhere and my real daughter is still busy giving me heartburn and swift kicks in the bladder so modeling is provided by Nelly the Jaundice Balloon.

and since then, I haven't knit a stitch for my poor, deprived daughter. No more hats. No little sweaters. No booties. Or socks. Or lacy baby blankets. She will be forced to spend her first winter in storeboughts. I've been meaning to post my bad-knitter-mom confession, but she may yet be saved! Several months ago, I had already received booties from a family friend and a beautiful, handknit blanket from a generous knitter who I met up with in Paris. Now, I have this:

It looks like some ladies are in cahoots to save my daughter from her lazy mother. This hat is from Cari who included a note saying that I am the lucky recipient of a "cyber baby shower." How cool is that?! And how cool is Alison for organizing it for someone who she has never even met in person?! I was so touched I sat and cried and then sniffled all day long just thinking about it. Thanks ladies!

This will make you feel alot better: I just knit my son and daughter their first items and they are ages 8 and 6, respectively. I was a knitter long before they were born! I know, shameful. I just kept thinking "they are growing way too fast, what if I don't get the whatever done in time for them to wear it?". So procrastination led to years of not knitting for them. They both now have very cute Wonderful Wallaby sweaters and I'm on a roll already planning their next ones....Don't beat yourself up.
Being pregnant takes enough out of us!

Alison is the best, isn't she? From the few cyber shower gifts that I'm aware of, you'll be sniffling with joy pretty soon. Handknits from near and far. We love you (even though some of us still haven't met you in person! me!) and we want you to be spoiled!

xox,

Hello back attcha!!

My niece was do the same day as your little one...she's here! It won't be long now;-)

Don't feel guilty, you've moved house, which is stressful enough, and you've even moved continent which has got to be even more stressful. And plus you're growing a person! You have plenty on your plate as it is! :o) The hats are beautiful though.

Posted by: Ceri at October 23, 2005 03:52 AM

That hat is too cute. Your little girl is going to look extra sweet in it.

Salut Kate! What a great idea - a cyber shower! And I, too, have been a little slow on the kiddie knits - Derek keeps saying, "only four more months," "only three more months," and now we're at "only two more months"! So - do you think we'll be able to knit during all those great moments where crevette and nutella are asleep in the first few months? I hope so, 'cause I'm building a stash like it's my job!

Hooray for Alison! She has created a) Handknits for the newborn! and b) Blog content from Kate! Good work all round, and much gratitude from me (in place of joining in, for I am too busy attempting to warp the space time continuum in order to knit a present for my sister's 21st and garments for some of her guests). Maybe for your next baby, Kate... x

Hi, I'm a mother of a almost 3 y/o boy and 8 weeks old girl, and knit everything for all my friends and relatives, but almost nothing for my own!
Last week I decided to change, so you're really not the only one!

Posted by: ajoursteek at October 21, 2005 05:05 AM

All I can say is - sit back and enjoy the ride :) And lets see what everyone sends you!

Posted by: Alison at October 20, 2005 10:58 PM

See, the last thing I would think to send you would be knit somethings, coals to Newcastle and all. Is this a private party or can anyone virtually attend?

Posted by: julia fc at October 20, 2005 07:06 PM

I understand how you feel. My little boy is 8 weeks old. I have knit him one sweater and a pair of socks. The socks were to small the day he was born. Got to be careful with socks or you end up having to frog the toes. Don't worry you will have plenty of requests for pink purple and sparkly before long.

so glad you still have that soft baby blanket I knitted for you! I am finally getting around to knitting a clapotis in in a cashmere angora yarn someone gave me.. and I wish I could send you a quarter.. but I don't have your snail mail adress. I will send a bisou to you and your sweet growing family...

Posted by: Nancy at October 20, 2005 04:56 PM

So, you know, when I find my way out from under this pile of work, I have the first installment of my part of the cyber shower for you...

bisoux, bébé :-)

Aw, a cyber-shower! So sweet! I agree, though--don't feel guilty. You're busy right now providing food and shelter to that little girl of yours and there's only so much a Mom can do. That's why people HAVE baby showers! (And really, your model is adorable--very sweet little smile.)

A shower! Looks like it's starting to rain baby hats!

You print out Steph's comment and paste it on the back of your hand. NO GUILT! Take care of yourself, do what you can, enjoy everything (including shower gifts), but especially be ready with the love -- besides food, shelter and a clean diaper, that's all the sweet little baby wants...

; )

Oh good! It arrived! I was in such a scattered state of getting ready for the colony when I sent it that I was half afraid I wrote the address out wrong. And then I HAD planned to do a bit more with the card than just shove it in there... Sigh. Good intentions, though. And the eggplant hat was knit with lots of warm fuzzy baby thoughts for you.

Posted by: cari at October 20, 2005 02:37 PM

Please please please stop mother-to-be guilt. There will always be expectations (about knitting and everything else) on you as a mother that result in guilt etc. Ignore them.

My children don't have a lot of knitted things from me either. I was too busy tired when they were babies, and watching your child grow out of something a month after you knit is hard, so I stopped trying to knit their wardrobe and focused on enjoying whatever I choose to knit.

And when your knitting time becomes more chaotic, this is the best thing you can do.

Posted by: Steph at October 20, 2005 02:25 PM

Your excellent designs have many many fans, I'm quite sure. If this cyber-shower becomes more public (hint, hint), I'm sure you'd have enough to outfit the baby for decades. :-) Send me your address and I'll happily send something along.

Posted by: The Feminist Mafia at October 20, 2005 02:06 PM

Send me your address and I'll send off some baby girl handknits. I love my son and all but I also love knitting baby girl clothes!

Posted by: Brynne at October 20, 2005 01:17 PM

add me to the list, I haven't knit anything for the kid yet, not that its been that long, but I really don't know as I will get to it at all. At least I know what a layette is now--thank you for that! I was too embarassed to ask anyone, haha.

Posted by: kaitlyn at October 20, 2005 12:57 PM

I haven't knit a stitch either and am not ashamed to admit it. I'm busy being pregnant, and knitting is not compatible with that. Be as "lazy" as you can now, it'll be soon over with that!

Posted by: valentina at October 20, 2005 12:44 PM

wow--I'm glad I'm not the only one!! I'm due in February, and I've only made him one measly sweater, that probably won't fit him for another year. I've been feeling pangs of guilt (oh, they've already started and he's not even born...) as I'm knitting xmas gifts and things for me, but I still have 3 months, right? Plenty of time...
So lucky about your shower, and can't wait to see the loot!!

Posted by: aubree at October 20, 2005 12:05 PM

Being in cahoots can be most fun but don't sit around crying too much, there will be lots to see! I do hope your new daughter isn't jealous of your older Tom-Daughter. I love the hat from Cari! So beautiful!
