lotsa knittin'

I've been knitting loads lately. My parents were here last week and I took advantage of the eager babysitters to sit and knit. It was work-knitting. It's all done and I'm actually going to show it to you for once.

See? Do you like them? OK, fine, you can't really see, but you see that there are green things and there's a big orange-ish thing. You'll see them more clearly later. And now that my work is done, I am going to knit for fun. Really. For once. And for me. Really. Here's what I'm making:

Fair Isle Socks by Alina Egerman in Brick Socks that Rock and Citrine Soft Rock thanks to Julia who spoiled me with this yarn (as well as some other stuff that I'll show you later) as a birthday/waiting for baby present. My parents are gone so who knows how long these will take me. Two socks is a lot of Tadpole naps.

I've been thinking a lot about the knitting olympics (I'm not bothering to link because I'm sure you all know about it). I'm toying with the idea of participating. But I'm torn about what is an appropriate challenge. I thought about steeking. Or actually knitting a sweater that I sketched over a year ago and just haven't gotten to. Or finishing up a couple patterns that have been lingering for ages and I keep meaning to work on. Getting any knitting time into a day is challenging enough. My in-laws are coming into town two days before the olympics start and leaving the day after, so I will probably have my hands free more than usual. I don't know what is the right balance between challenging and realistic. And am I on the Canadian team or the American team? Maybe I'll start my own expatriate team. Enough babbling. Time to cast on for a sock... that rocks.

Hey, do join the Olympics!!! And please, do start up an Expat Team...coz, I'm a Thai expat living in Germany, who's a guy and who also knits....and I doubt that I could make a Team Thailand. So, an expat team would be better. ;)

You are so very deserving of some socks that rock. Enjoy it! I love the way that yarn knits up.

I say knit for Team Baby and just aim for for a wee finished garment.

I understand your thoughts on realistic vs. challenging. Perhaps you can combine the 2? A pattern that is already available could be a start - because your own design would require that you keep up with and/or rewrite as you go. Just a thought - but some nice yarn that you pictured.

the socks will be lovely and well green is a pretty color :)

The STR FI socks will be beautiful. I hear you about limited knitting time. Try doing it with Tadpole plus a toddler. heh I bet you get more knitting done than I do.

That sure will be a long visit from the in-laws - I think I'd go nutty having visitors for what... 18... 19 days? It'll be plenty of time for you and Frog to get out of the house alone together. :)

Oooh, that design looks so pretty! It looks like a really fast knit. (Get it? "Fast?" Because it's blurry? Okay, so it's late....)

I have some socks that rock waiting for me to knit up. Just need to perfect my sock knitting skillz. isn't that yarn yummy! I look forward to seeing your socks!

Hope you're doing well! We miss you in Paris...

To juggle a child and knit at all at this phase is olympian to say the least. I think you get a special dispensation for casting on. So many people are making their own rules, I think you deserve to.

Sounds as though getting your Fair Isle socks finished in the time allowed would be enough of a challenge for the Olympics.

I'm in the same position regarding the olympics. Frankly, I'm busy. What I did was sign up to do one thing, and then as many socks as I could manage. Flexible goals are all I can handle right now.

Hi, first time commenting here. I'm excited to say I'm going to attempt a clapotis for the Knitting Olympics, even if it is so 2005. :-)

what a treat from Julia! looks like fun. I'm also deliberating about joining the knitting olympics for similar reasons- what do to? I mean, there are so many things I'd like to do, but I don't know if joing the team is going to help make them happen... But being as I'm half Welsh Valentina's idea of joining the welsh team has me tempted!

Those socks looks scrumptious. I'm thinking of joining Team Wales for the Knitting Olympics, because I've been to Wales and that qualifies me for the team. And because I don't have the time to look for the existence of Team Switzerland or Croatia. Or create either. If you know where Wales is, join Team Wales. They're the "Jamaican Bobsled team of the Knitting Olympics" - that tag line is what really got me.
