Perks and Quirks
Lesson No. 2 of 2006: When you realize you have made a mistake, don't rip 80 rows in a fit of rage. You may not really feel like grafting, but in the long run taking out 1 row, knitting 12 and then grafting it back together is actually quicker.
I've been promising to show the cyber shower gifts forevaaaaah. I'm finally going to do it. The lovely Alison spoiled me, not only by organizing the whole thing, but also by sending me these awesome things (as well as some bath stuff that I have already used several times):

How gorgeous is that quilt? I love it.
Angela tagged me with the 5 weird habits meme. So here goes:
1. I can't knit if my feet are hot. If my feet are hot, my hands are hot and sweaty and then I can't knit, so in the summer, I knit, but often only if I have a fan blowing straight at my bare feet. Is that a habit? Maybe not.
2. When I'm thinking about something I did or said that was embarrassing or stupid or I wish I hadn't done, I make a little noise or start singing. I don't mean to. I only know I do it when the noise comes out.
3. I don't like ice. In fact, I'm very very particular about the temperature of food. Soup can't just be hot, it has to be very hot. And I don't like ice in my drinks. I like water at room temperature or just a little colder. I know there are other examples... I just can't think of them right now.
4. When I speak on the phone to someone in French and we say goodbye (in French, of course) I feel like I didn't say goodbye unless I say, "Bye" in English too.
5. When I get out of the shower I have to put a towel turban on, then I put on my bathrobe. Doing it the other way around is unacceptable.
And I'm supposed to tag 5 people. Ummmm. I'm goiong to randomly pick commenters from my last post. Peth, Amanda, Julia, Laura Lee and Wendy, go to it!

hey hotfoot, gorgeous gift and luminous tadpole! though she really is at that next stage now...do they go directly to frog after that? i used to be a biology nerd, but those days are long gone. OK, i'm going on a bit. i should have stopped at luminous. because she is.

I like my water on the room temperature side, too. I'm honored at the tagging, and I'm going to try to think up 5 decent and revealable habits!
What a marvelous quilt, and a lovely little baby with a very smart sweater!

I finally checked out how you are doing. The baby is so beautiful. Congratulations. Sounds like you are doing great. I'm very happy for you. For some reason our move from Paris has wiped me out and I can't seem to get my act together. I'm hoping to feel settled sometime soon. Enjoy motherhood!

I love that quilt too. And your tadpole is very cute.

Tadpole is just ridiculously beautiful. The quilt is stunning -- hooray for Alison!

Hello Kate. This is a very nice picture, a beautiful baby, and a stunning quilt.
I just ordered your elisabeth pattern, 'cause I like your creations very much (of course I've been clapotied). I won't probably be able to resist Lisa when the booties will be disponible!
How old is Tadpole now? Oh dear, those wee ones grown scaringly fast. I can't believe my n°3 will be two months tomorrow! (sigh)
BTW, did you make her sweater? I'ld like to know if I could find a pattern.
Oh, and I think I must confess something: I made some fingerless Clapomitaines, and posted the pattern for them on my blog (in french for the moment, but the translation is in progress). I hope you don't mind. I confess I forgot to ask you the permission first, at least to ask for the name. Lord, I feel guilty now. I hope you will forgive me. My only excuse must be the post-partum hormonal drop-down. Normally I'm very much careful with that kind of Droit d'auteur question.
Please tell me if you mind. I will remove the post (or we will find together a compromise).
Yours

Wow - I just discovered the spring preview for Interweave Knits and I'm absolutely captivated by your Sunrise Circle Jacket - it's stunning! I can't wait for the issue to arrive so I can take a good long look at a full size picture. Congratulations on another publication!

Is that Tadpole? She's become a little person! Already. She is very Advanced. ;-)
Posted by: Jenny at January 22, 2006 10:00 PM
The baby is gorgeous, as is that blanket. You are so spoiled.
And, the good-bye thing reminds me of what my French mother-in-law does. She always says "au revoir" twice in a fading out sort of way before hanging up the phone. I guess saying good-bye when you don't see the person isn't always easy.

Beautiful gifts and adorable baby!

Look how big tadpole has gotten already! Amazing! And so cute!!!
Posted by: Mary at January 20, 2006 05:23 PM
I also make a weird noise or sing when I think of something embarrassing. I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one.
Posted by: Jennifer at January 20, 2006 02:46 PM
Tadpole truly is lovely.
It makes me slightly sad to see her growing so quickly, as my little fella is only about a month behind her.
Isn't it crazy how you're pregnant for an eternity, then the time disappears like a vapor after they're born???

Happy baby = best gift of all. And, I'm right there with you on the ice thing. I drink a lot of sparkling water at home and I keep the bottle on the counter. Luckily, no one has yet complained that it's not cold enough.

Such a sweet tadpole on a lovely quilt! It's stunning! I'm glad you're back to posting and sharing pics! Hope all you New Year plans work for you!

I want Alison to throw me a cyber shower. What beautiful gifties for a lovely tadpole. Great to "see" you!
Posted by: Julia at January 18, 2006 01:17 PM
I also sing or make little noises when I think of embarrassing things I've done.
The tadpole is très cute, luv the quilt!
Posted by: BuffaloJen at January 18, 2006 12:56 PM
Ahhh what a precious Tadpole! And Alison is SO talented - the quilt is beautiful. You're so lucky to have such a treasure.
Okay, I'll do the meme. It's my first meme tag. :)

"When I'm thinking about something I did or said that was embarrassing or stupid or I wish I hadn't done, I make a little noise or start singing. I don't mean to. I only know I do it when the noise comes out" Ha ha ... remember reading a book by Allan & Barbara Pease, they told that in an uncomfortable situation, men shut their mouths and women start talking ... among many of the Mars - Venus differences ...
The baby is very cute, with her tight-fisted hands and raised left leg, the blue eyed beauty is getting ready to face the cruel world.

Baby and quilt are beautiful!
Posted by: amanda at January 18, 2006 12:04 PM
De-lurking also to say that you're kidlet is adorable and I am the same way about ice. People always look at me funny when I say "oh, no ice please" and they're like "but it's room temperature" and I think to myself, yes it's best that way.
Also with you on the piping hot soup & tea.

That quilt is amazing! But not as amazing as the little gem in the middle! She's so cute!
I hope you're doing well... I've gotten back into the swing of knitting. Come by and see the KNOTs blog and say HI. We miss you.

Your daughter is simply beautiful. Your new spring IK design is, too!
Posted by: Brynne at January 18, 2006 07:21 AM
Wow, what a great quilt -- and the outfit! Hahaha, yeah, and not a bad baby at all! ; ) Look at all the hair she has!
Posted by: Vicki at January 17, 2006 11:32 PM
Beautiful quilt!
I can't stand ice in my drinks either, unless it's a cocktail. I don't drink fast enough and the ice just melts and then my soda or juice ends up all watery - no thank you!
Posted by: Anne at January 17, 2006 11:05 PM
THAT QUILT TAKES MY BREATH AWAY!!!! Not a bad baby, either. And ain't she the lucky girl - with all those handmade clothes? She looks pretty happy in them, too!
Posted by: Norma at January 17, 2006 09:42 PM
Gorgeous gifts. So nice.
Oh and you and I share some idiosycracies. I'm definitely particular about food tempuratures. I like coffee and tea quite toasty to start with as well. I am not horribly troubled by ice, but prefer room tepurature.
As for the hair turban, I'm the same way because my long hair makes the body towl unnecessarily soaked and then I'm uncomfortable.
Posted by: Marnie at January 17, 2006 06:31 PM
she's just. so. beautiful. and the quilt is amazing! the photo looks like a debbie bliss photo shoot :)
Posted by: becks at January 17, 2006 05:58 PM
baby frogette so cute.
so did you like ice before you moved to france?
and, when i think of something stupid that i did or said, i shake my head from side to side ...you know to get the thought out of there
Posted by: maryse at January 17, 2006 05:28 PM
All I can offer is - :)))))))))) all round.
Posted by: Alison at January 17, 2006 04:49 PM
I'm delurking to say that while the quilt is gorgeous, the baby is even more gorgeous! She's really beautiful, Kate. Thanks for sharing her picture.
Posted by: Carole at January 17, 2006 03:42 PM
#5--well, sure, otherwise the robe gets soaked!
And, Tadpole looks absolutely adorable stretched out on that gorgeous quilt. What a sweet little half-smile! "I know you think I'm adorable--and you're right."
Posted by: --Deb at January 17, 2006 03:17 PM
Is that a hand knit sweater on the Tadpole?
Cute blanket and cute photo.
Posted by: Sarah HB at January 17, 2006 02:59 PM
