Conundrums

What do you do with a double batch of "sinker" brownies when nobody shows up for playgroup? I'm in a playgroup on Fridays. The babies are too young for playing, so it should really be called hangoutandchatsoyougetoutofthehouseanddontgoinsanethiswintergroup. Just a few minutes ago, the only person that I was pretty sure would come called and said she wasn't coming. I haven't heard from anyone else. I'm just sitting here wondering if I will be all alone with Michael Smith today. At least it forced me to clean my house. Ooh. Just got a phone call. One person is coming late and her friend might come. So the new question is: How many brownies can two, maybe three, women eat?

Updated to give you this virtual dessert:

I know it just looks like a brownie, but it's more than that. It's a sinker.

What should I knit for the knitting olympics? I won't be able to make the sweater I wanted to make because I won't have the yarn on time. I'm totally in love with my socks that rock yarn and contacted blue moon fiber arts about their thicker yarns because I think it's perfect for this sweater I half-designed over a year ago. There's no way I'll be able to get it in time. So what do I do? I guess I could finish up my lingering patterns, but somehow that doesn't sound appealing. I wanted to make something for fun. For me. Or maybe for Tadpole. Maybe I should find a pattern for the Morehouse Merino I bought a billion years ago.

Yay. Doorbell. I won't be alone.

Post-six-guest-playgroup update to allow me to finish my ramblings thoughts: So. I was thinking about finally using my precious Morehouse merino and it only makes sense to use it for me for about a billion reasons that I won't bore you with. And yeah, I could probably whip up a simple pattern for myself that would fit well... or I could be lazy and knit from someone else's pattern and risk it not fitting as well, but it would be quicker (and I could blame the designer if it looked bad - kidding). Does anybody know any good patterns that would work well with a variegated merino that is about 4, or 4.5 or 5 or even 5.5 sts per inch? I haven't swatched yet. Eh. Maybe I should just design something myself. I just have no idea what to do with this yarn since I've had it for so long. Do I make a turtleneck? Do I do ribs? Will it pool? Should I just keep this yarn forever and enjoy it's beauty instead of knitting it into a possibly mediocre sweater? If I knit a sweater to fit me now - two months after giving birth - will it fit me later? Will I like it later? I just don't know what to do. Your brilliant suggestions would be much appreciated. Or maybe I'll just make my circle jacket. I think I have a yarn that would work for that too.

Um, surely I'm not the only person to think 'Clapotis'? That yarn is so Clapotisable. xoxo Kay

I am so much craving brownies now! Yum, yum chocolate!

Personally, I *LOVE* your circle jacket. I am dying to drop everything and do that for the Olympics, but I just don't think I can get it done in 16 days, and I don't have the yarn.

If you're anything like me, you will be much smaller in a few months than now, at 2 months post partum. In my case that was a very good thing!

Funny about how people think we're so busy with newborns, eh? I was lucky, my guy was born in September so it was easier to get out then. Of course now with the snowsuits, boots, hats, mitts and protesting 2 year-old, most days I would rather stay inside! Mind you, I *am* going mildly insane...;)

I have been playing with brownie recipie for ages trying to make a homemade cake like brownie. Whatever a sinker is...would you please post the recipe?

As for the yarn ... I love the merino...and you'll never know if it will knit up nice if you don't try. I personally don't care if hand-dyed yarn pools...I think it's part of its character.

I figure that if we are talking 2 to 3 breastfeeding moms.... you could easiy eat a whole pan. How else would you hit the extra 1000 calories a day over what you ate when pregnant?

No thoughts on the morehouse. Sorry.

The Ribby Cardigan is a good pattern - from Chic Knits...

You could always do a top down raglan... simple, customizable and would look great with the variegated merino. You would have the designed it myself fit, without the frustrations you might not want in you fun-knit project. Save the frustrations for your next Interweaves project. :)

(Now, I need to bake some brownies.)

I love Morehouse Merino. But I haven't knit enough with it to help you out. But I'm excited to see what you come up with.

My body changed significantly each month after giving birth. The changes finally slowed down about nine months after and then ceased when she gave up nursing at a year. My chest ended up going from a 38DD to a 36C. So, while you might not change as much, I wouldn't make something with a small amount of ease, because it might not fit later. If you want to make something with alot of ease, you're probably safe - it's not like your arms are going to change length or anything, no matter how heavy that baby gets!

Can someone pretty please with sugar on top explain the term "sinker brownies"?

Posted by: Jen at February 5, 2006 11:05 AM

I say, design something yourself for the KOs... this adds to the challenge, and if I remember right wasn't that something you wanted to do this year (sorry, I have been lurking for a while)? two birds, one ball of yarn and a pair of needles~

so, how many brownies can 5 or 6 woman eat- those look yummy. May have to go play in the kitchen with chocolate now...

Sinker brownies? Sounds really good to me right now. Play groups? This will be my world someday, I'm sure. So, knitting Olympics! Sarah told me about your idea and I think it's great. You can count me in. I'll be attempting the Lady Eleanor. I have Silk Garden that I think will make a lovely Eleanor. Can i just tell you that i want to curl up in the middle of your merino and take a nap. I love the colors.

Hmmmm... brownies. I need to make myself some NOW!

I had the same conundrum after having my second baby. I wanted to knit myself something, but you never know what your body will be like post-nursing. I suggest some sort of cardi or wrap. That way, you can knit yourself something great from that beautiful yarn (love Morehouse!) and you don't need to be as concerned about what your chest will be post nursing (best not to think about it dear.) Maybe it will be a snug fit now and a loose one later, but it will still work.

heh No play group here (well there is one but I don't like going). But I found a knitter who has no children to tear up my house or terrorize my children when she comes over!

My vote: circle jacket - eat as many brownies as you want - you can get away with nearly anything when you're still nursing if it doesn't give Tadpole an upset tummy. :)

I vote for the morehouse merino, in a pattern designed by you. If it fits you beautifully now, and not so beautifully in a little while - well, it might fit you again somewhere along the line. And from the point of view of someone who loves your designs, I don't think I'm alone in being excited to see what you come up with.

How many brownies can 2-3 women eat? Rhetorical question, right? An entire baking dish of them is highly possible:-) Oh, and when you're breastfeeding, you can actually allow yourself to do so, you NEED the extra calories:-)

Posted by: Julia at February 4, 2006 03:22 AM

OK, I give up... What's a sinker?

Posted by: Anne at February 4, 2006 01:51 AM

And P.S. If there are any left, brownies freeze perfectly.

Posted by: Norma at February 3, 2006 10:19 PM

That does it. The signs keep dropping out of the sky. I'm making brownies tomorrow!

Posted by: Norma at February 3, 2006 10:18 PM

For the merino -- how about a mommy/daughter matching (take your pick!) It does look cute when you have mother/daughter outfits!

Great...now I'm craving brownies. It's all your fault, you know.

Posted by: cari at February 3, 2006 09:04 PM

hi new mama kate,
i can relate to the unfortunate quarantine that is winter-with-little-babes. enjoy the time with your bundle, as it passes too quickly. i only wish i had a playgroup closer to me - that is, other than the knitbloggers that keep me smiling during naps.
i wanted to suggest the ballet wrap cardi from the cover of winter IK for the knitting olympics, such a nice sillouette (and handy for nursing). i'm using 10+ year old pale heather green tahki homespun tweed from my stash - should be delish, as it would surely be with that morehouse merino. i'd love someone to knit together with... during naptimes, of course!
BEST!

That brownie looks absolutely delicious. I think that if you designed a sweater with ribbing or something else stretchy incorporated into the design then it would definately fit you now and a few months down the road when you get your pre-pregnancy figure back.

I am feeling the winter chill just beginning to fall upon us. Isn't it time for a followup to everybody's favorite - Clapotis? We could ALL do it with you!

I hated the let down of being all ready for mom's group and then being alone. This is a big event on the social calendar--eat lots of brownies!

Posted by: Steph at February 3, 2006 04:14 PM

Ooh, that yarn is so bright and lovely!

Posted by: susan at February 3, 2006 03:06 PM

i want a brownie... but maybe thats just pms talking. P.S.- i love the sunrise circle jacket...its next on my list when i free up some time!

I'm home, I could've eaten the whole brownies just myself! ;) I just bought the Chef at home book for Carl. LOL! I just ordered from Ram Wools (http://www.ramwools.com) and received it within 3 days. Just in case you might find something to buy from them. ;)

Happy to hear that at least you aren't stuck with the brownies. LOL!

Yeah for playgroups! I remember how stir crazy I was when my girls were tiny. And, of course, no one called, assuming I'd be too busy. I'm glad you'll have some adult company! Enjoy the brownies!
