On the needles

In yesterday's post, I wasn't trying to be hard on myself and I didn't think I was - I thought I was just taking stock and looking at how I work, but thanks for your comments telling me to take it easy and enjoy my time with Tadpole. I'm trying to and I am, though the introvert in me is struggling with this never ever being alone thing. So I'm also trying to enjoy the brief periods of time I have when she's asleep and I'm not. Here's what I've been doing:

Fair Isle Sock - ripped all the way back to the first fair isle pattern and reknit to what you see here. I'm making them on dpns but slipped the stitches onto a circ just to try it on. The heel is better, but still not perfect. I can live with it though and if it really starts to bug me, I'll go back and weave some yarn through to tighten it all up. Anyway, you can't see skin through them anymore, so I'm alright with it.

Mindless Sock - Frog and I were watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind the other night. I had never seen it before and he wanted to make sure I didn't miss one tiny bit of it and complained when I took out my knitting, so I've started this mindless sock to knit next time we're watching something that demands/deserves my (almost) undivided attention. It's sitting on top of a small patchwork thingy (coaster?) and a note from my friend Anne in France. We used to knit together. She started out as my student, but we quickly became friends. It's neat how a love of craft and art and clothing can bring together two people with a 30-some year age difference and completely different backgrounds, no? You all are bloggers. Of course you know what I'm talking about. That's what blogging does too.

Fair Isle Sweater for Tadpole - I've also knit the hem of my sweater for Tadpole (I figured that using a contrasting color would be cool) and the yarn a-hem my yarn-bearing friends are arriving tomorrow so I'll be able to keep going while I still have momentum. Have any of you knit with Dale Baby Ull before? Did you get the gauge on the label? Did you use 2.5mms? The hem seems to be a bit smaller than I had planned. And no, I didn't do a swatch first. The hem was my swatch. So I'm thinking about going up to 3mms for the body. I'm cutting it close enough by making a fairly complicated sweater on pretty small needles in a not huge size for my quickly growing daughter. I would hate to knit it on 2.5s and end up regretting it. Should I add that I'm not 100% sure that I have enough yarn? Yes, this is a gamble. I'm fine with that. I've got a car trip coming up which will hopefully provide me with some quality knitting time and the pressure of a growing baby should keep me motivated. You can see I wrote her a little note on the hem. It says, to [Tadpole] love Mama. --Insert all the cheesy things I would like to say about why I did that here. I'll spare you for now and tell you another day when I'm feeling particularly sappy.--

Love all the projects, but have to ask, what yarn is that for your mindless sock? I love the colors and have been looking for almost that exact combination to no avail...

That sweater you're making tadpole is adorable! Seriously, you are an amazing knitter! When are you coming back to paris? Come and knit with us!

I've moved on to socks too... just did basic rib socks nothing compared to those fair isle socks, damn girl... I'm hoping to do some lace ones soon.

OH, my froggy boy is home... catch you later.

Bises.

Totally love the socks - are you going to make a pattern? Hint, hint...

Lovely to see a few of your projects in progress- I love the idea of a message in the hem.
My mum always embroiders a little message on the back of the quilts she makes- it's a lovely touch. Turning over the corner to read it reminds me of the special feelings and love that went into it.

Catching up on my blog-reading - my own mama is visiting this week and next..... Anyway, the inscription is so sweet and such a good idea. It makes me want to add messages to everything I knit!

I never get manufacturer's gauge, & baby ull is no different. I use US size 2, whatever that is in mm, & get ~7sts/in, if memory serves

that fair isle sock makes me want to knit socks, and i never want to knit socks.
the sweater note makes me want to go wake my little one up for a hug, and i never, ever want to wake her up when she's asleep and i'm not.
got to start a baby knit now...

I LOVE the inscription on tadpole's sweater!
I'm a mommy of 6 now, (my youngest is a month younger than tadpole. I had serious issues with the lack of 'alone' time with my first 2 children. It really does get better with time.

Aw! That hem! It makes me want to grab some Baby Ull and get going!! At the suggestion of the Philosopher's Wool people I've knit my son's initials into a fair isle pattern that's lurching along for him. You can't tell they're there but I like knowing they are. Sort of what motherhood is all about.

I have knit with baby Ull (some teensy mittens) and they turned out great, although much to my shock I was large on gauge. (So I knit another pair in a smaller size.)

My gauge has always been so reliable, but in the past six months it's been sloshing all over the place. I wonder if it's an early warning size of menopause...

i'm suddenly in the mood to make a tiny sweater...but i don't know any tiny people :(

i've been reading your blog for a couple weeks and i love your designs - i made a clapotis as a birthday gift which the recipient adored, and now i'm going to make the sunrise jacket, can't wait to cast on!

Awwww.

I made my husband a pair of socks that said "WITH [heart] FR BETH" around the base of the toes - that's all that would fit. He thought it was the sweetest thing.

Here's a good alphabet chart:

Ahh, Eternal Sunshine... I wish my memory could be erased so I could watch that movie for the first time again.
The jumper for tadpole is gorgeous.

I think your Tadpole sweater is one of the sweetest things I've ever seen for a baby. Just lovely. I might have to steal the idea myself after I have a baby.

BTW, where did you get that great Fair Isle sock pattern? I know I've seen it somewhere.

Posted by: Leslie Dotson at March 9, 2006 04:40 PM

I looked and looked... but couldn't find it. Is that sock your own design? If not, can you please tell me where to find the pattern? I'm in love with it!

I have found that when knitting with baby ull it relaxes a lot with wet blocking. the yarn balloons quiet a bit so if it is a little tight it will loosen up when blocked. I also go up a needle size for the color work and then back down for the plain as it pulls in quite a bit for me.

First of all I'm glad to see there are other men out there like my T. who don't understand that we can multi-task. Um. Hello? I can watch a movie, knit, eat, drink, and probably do our taxes all at the same time. Give me a break! Leave me alone and let me just knit dammit!

And a big Awwwwwwwwwwww in regards to the love note on the sweater. So special.

There's nothing cheesy in expressing your love in a uniquely "you" way for your daughter. She will love it love it love it.

Posted by: Liz K. at March 9, 2006 09:28 AM

That sweater will hold special memories for both of you for a lifetime. I can't wait to hear the story.

And that fair isle? Just to die for!! I'll have to look back and see if you are following a pattern or making this up as you go. I am hearing the siren song of the fair isle sock!

Oh, Kate. I've been reading your blog for a long time. I have an 18 month old son and, while I check you every day, I totally understand why daily blogging just isn't in the cards right now! (Maybe a more knitterly thing to say is that it 'isn't in the stash at present.') Anyway, your lovely sweater hem reminds me of a friend of mine who is a singer/pianist/songwriter. She wrote and recorded a gorgeous song called "Olivia, for You" when her daughter was born, and it absolutely kills me that I don't have talent enough to create something like that for Henry. Any chance you might give us hints for making such a hem, so that those of us who are pattern-followers as opposed to designers can try this ourselves?

Aww.....I love words on shweaters...... its beautiful. It would only be cheesy and sappy if she was 15. And I know she did not grow THAT fast...

Your Fair Isle work is beautiful. Lucky Tadpole!

Hi!
Beautiful sweater, i love the colours!
from Dales website (www.dale.no):
Recommended gauge for Baby Ull is 32 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm) using U.S. size 2 (2.5 mm) needles.
approx. 192 yards (175 meters). Each ball weighs 1 3/4 ounces (50 grams), with 20 balls per kilo.

What a sweater idea! I LOVE it and so will Miss Tadpole as she gets older and outgrows the sweater but not her Mama's love. Precious!

Posted by: Rebecca at March 9, 2006 01:53 AM

Great projects! I need to start a mindless knitting sock of my own. Your baby sweater is adorable, too. I love the personal message. Hope you'll enjoy knitting these things in what little free time you have!

Posted by: molly at March 9, 2006 01:15 AM

"to Tadpole love Mama" That's the sweetest thing in the world. Makes me wanna go make one for each of my children. ha No, I've been making them all socks. That's nearly as sweet. But maybe I'll put "love Mama" on them some time. Is that FI sock your own pattern? Silly question - I'm sure it is.
