fraternal twins

I love trekking (yarn). I don't love my socks. I cast on 76 sts because I was going to make Grumperina's Jaywalkers. I think I'm one of the last knitters to make them. Then I thought maybe I should use a striped yarn for them and saw Miriam's Simple Trekking socks(pdf) which started with 72 sts. I realized that 76 was really too many for my foot and started decreasing. Now I'm hesitating between just starting all over with 72 sts, continuing and making ribbed socks, making stockinette socks and using Miriam's design. I just don't know what to do so I'm doing nothing. I'd better decide soon because I'm about to trek on over to the US.
In other news: Happy Canada Day (tomorrow)! Thank you, dear Canadians, for accepting us here. We like it. We like that stores are open on Sundays. We like the people. We like having a washer and dryer. We like Canadian Tire money. We like the leaves turning colors in the fall. We don't like all those products made with maple syrup, but other than that, we like it here.

Don't worry, I haven't knit them yet so you definitely aren't the last one :)

Actually, you aren't the last one to knit the Jaywalkers...I haven't knit them yet either. However, they are on my 'To Knit' list - does that count? Looking forward to seeing your progress on these socks :-)

Well, there appear to be several of us who haven't yet made the Jaywalker pattern. I want to do it but wasn't sure whether the 84 stitches will be enough for me. I apparently knit tightly (socks run about 9 sts/in for me), and a 72-stitch caston fits me well, especially with a ribbed pattern. Most sock patterns appear to be written for loose knitters. I don't want to increase my needle size (from 2.5 mm) because I don't like a loosely knit sock). I do agree that the Trekking yarn is really nice to work with. Maybe we should have a KAL for the "last to knit Jaywalkers". If anyone is interested, let me know and maybe we can organize something.

Hey Kate, I've updated the simple trekking sock pattern because there was a bit missing, so the file name has changed. I've been getting a lot of traffic from your link (thank you!) and I wondered if you could change the link to the updated pattern?
Thanks!

Nope, I'm definitely the last knitter to make Jaywalkers - they're on my list, but I haven't gotten to them yet! Yours are looking lovely.

As an American living in Canada, do you still celebrate Independence Day and Thanksgiving in November?

1. Gorgeous socks regardless of the pattern. The color = yummy.
2. I just finished my second (!) Clapotis. Thanks for a stupendous pattern!
xoxo!

Come to Wisconsin and I'll babysit while you knit away on those socks! Even make you some lemonade!

When I knit the jaywalker pattern I thought 70-some stitches sounded big...but then I couldn't stretch the *()$* thing over my (pretty narrow) heel. The have no give at all. I'd make the bigger size unless your foot is no wider than a toothpick... or just make the other pattern!

hehe I love Mim's comment!
Whatever that Trekking yarn becomes, it will be a beautiful creation - the colors! So cool!
Have a fun trek around the U.S. Are you coming to visit me in Kansas? :)

You're very smart to do nothing when you're unsure what to do! That's a lesson I have yet to learn - but maybe enough frogging will get it through my thick skull! LOVE that Trekking color, I think I'll have to add that to the stash!
Oh - I haven't made Jaywalkers either. Plan to, just haven't yet.

No Sunday shopping down here... there is a big 'brew ha-ha' going on with some stores now, so I expect we will have some version of Sunday shopping, not that I care either way.
Happy first Canucks Day, glad to have you here.

Hi Kate -- I've knit both Jaywalker and Miriam's pattern, and I really would advise Miriam's pattern, it is perfect for Trekking.
The Jaywalker st.patt. is well suited for a strongly variegated color yarn that will take advantage of the zigzag pattern stitch.
And for Jaywalker, when you're using a fine yarn like Trekking, the 84-st cast-on is better (using 2-mm or 2.25 ndls), because the leg doesn't stretch at all, so unless you have tiny narrow feet, it may be difficult to pull it over your heel. The 76-st cast-on is better when you're using slightly heavier yarn and larger needles (2.5-2.75).
I'm making another pair of Jaywalkers using Opal (on 84 sts) AND I have more Trekking in my stash and will be using Miriam's pattern again! Hope this helps...

I have yet to knit Jaywalker, though I will, I certainly will.
When I started Trekking, I resigned myself to the fact that the socks would be fraternal, but those look like they come from two different skeins!

Dear Kate, I am currently turning the heel on sock #1, Grumperina's Jaywalkers. I thought I was the last to knit these. In any case, I am the least experienced. I had to write Grumperina for clarification of the zig-zag pattern! Yipes!

Happy Canada Day from Nova Scotia - where Sunday shopping is forbidden and a sin!

I haven't knit socks yet, but I do eventually want to try Grumperina's Jaywalkers. You won't be the last.
I want to use a yarn with one colour in two hues instead of a varigated. I bought some sock yarn, dyed it, then overdyed half of it with the same colour so half of it is darker than the other, but the same colour. I'm hoping it will look better.
Your Trekking is a pretty colourway though.
Glad you are enjoying Canada!

Kate,
We're so thrilled that you're here. I'm just sorry that Mtl. doesn't have better yarn stores.

I cast on for Jaywalkers last week, and frogged it twice before deciding it wasn't for me. The striped yarn looked wonderful in the pattern, but I just couldn't get into it!

Nope, I'm the last knitter on the continent to tackle the Jaywalkers... and I've wished I lived in Canada for at least three years now! And now I have an itch to cast on socks in a "subtly variegated yarn."

love love the yarn - yummo!

Kate - we love having you here in Canada. I hope to see you at a Wednesday night MTL knits meetup on Monkland! Come by sometime! Have a good weekend and Canada Day! (by the way I'm in the middle of 3 knitting projects and one is Clapotis!!) I just found your name on a baby site (I'm just starting my 2nd trimester and was googling a few things)... (here's the link: http://www.bloggingbaby.com/2006/03/07/nicknames-for-the-not-yet-born/ ) They talk about you nicknaming your baby Tadpole! Cute article! I don't know if you know about it or not?

But you're too far from ME!

Miriam's sock will be so much easier and fit better so go for it. Enjoy your Trek!
Posted by: margene at June 30, 2006 04:42 PM
There's just something about Trekking yarn that makes it beautiful. Did you buy it locally by the way?
Posted by: ~Jo~ at June 30, 2006 04:41 PM
This is admittedly biased and self serving... but knit MY PATTERN! ;)
