to join
I'm a joiner. I have gobs and gobs of cascade fixation leftover from this so I joined this:

Only thing is, I only have that pale pink and I'm not a lover of pale pink. Anyone have a good (read: easy) way of dyeing it? I've never dyed anything before but I do know that kool-aid isn't a good option on cotton so I figured I would ask you all. Otherwise, I may just make some teeny tiny pink socks for Tadpole.
and I joined this too, though the bad weather is keeping me away from any treks:

Joined. I also joined (aka seamed) all of the pieces of the sweater I was working on. Here's a rare glimpse at my Work Knitting before it's published:

I said, "glimpse." Notice the glow of accomplishment and satisfaction on my face (I'm pretty happy with the results, but too tired to convey it with facial expressions and had no intention of sharing this photo when it was taken). While I was working on this project, I did some experimentation with joins. I tried a Russian join for the first time. I also did some splicing. I wasn't really happy with either though I think I'll give the Russian join another shot. What's your favorite way of joining new yarn? Bonus points to those who can give me a way that doesn't involve weaving in ends later because even though I don't mind seaming, weaving in ends bugs me.
Joined at the hip. The other day I went to knitting group. On the way home, Tadpole had had enough of her stroller and I had forgotten the wrap I use. I had clapotis with me and it was just long enough to tie into a temporary sling. "Slingotis" photo courtesy of Molly Ann

My own little tadpole is about the same age as yours (dob 12/11) and I made him a pair of rainbow-colored fixation socks. They look adorable on his feet for the 4.2 seconds that they remain there. Sock chewing and pulling are two of his favorite activities. I think I'll wait until he's a frog before I make another pair of socks for him! But it was worth it for the bragging rights when I show the photo ("see those socks? i made them.")

Is that...is that red hair? She's got redhead eyebrows...that baby looks like MY baby pictures, except I had more curls. *rooting for red hair*

A knitted sling! I never would have thought of it. Well, maybe not for everyday use, but way to improvise! What a sweetie.
That Cascade Fixation KAL looks fun. Even if I don't knit along, it'll be interesting to watch.

Wow I love the photos.. and yes she is adorable!! that was a great spur of the moment idea.. i truly have fallen in love with the Russian join.. i had tried it a few years ago.. and it didn't quite work for me.. but then recently i was trying to extend my socks in length.. and it was a dream.. i'm especially someone who AVOIDS weaving in with a passion.. hee..hee.. so this makes my life a dream :-) especially when i need just a little bit more somewhere and i'm sick of those bits and pieces all over the place.. they have never failed me yet :-) good luck at trying again.. karola

Hey lady. Been trying to email you at the usual address (baby announcement and a thank-you for the blanket) and the emails keep failing. Is it my server or yours?
Anyway, baby's here, and THANK YOU!!!!

Wait a minute--that's teh cute and all, but shouldn't that Clapotis be a museum piece? Quick, somebody call the Victoria and Albert!
Posted by: Stephy at June 19, 2006 11:35 AM
you guys are the cutest. i used a bedskirt thingy as a makeshift wrap last month. clapotis is much more chic.

SUCH a cute picture! I miss my "baby," she is a walking, talking (and did I mention TALKING?) 2 1/2 year old now, but she was just that size about 5 minutes ago!
Enjoy!

Little tadpole is one of the most adorable babies I've ever seen. I really enjoy the pictures of her!
Posted by: marissa at June 17, 2006 10:39 PM
I have had a lot of luck with the "spit splice" and the russian join works sometimes, but other times it seems to leave a bump. I have no secret creative join to offer though. Tadpole is adorable!

When she looks so cute like that, doncha just want to eat her? =) God that's adorable. And a knitted sling -- now there's an idea!

You have an adoreable girl. Absolutely adoreable.
But *shriek*, your poor clapotis! Mine would never get tied and stretched. You're a brave Mama.

Oh, how cute -- does the Miss have a bit of red in her hair? LOVE the Slingotis! ; )
Posted by: Vicki at June 16, 2006 08:22 AM
Look at you! Your hair is getting long, Tadpole is getting huge, time is just flying! I love the Clapotis sling... I'll have to pass that idea on.

Wow - the famous (infamous?) clapotis is now a baby sling! Wonders never cease! Aren't you innovative! And look how big tadpole is! Soooooo cute!!!!
How cool is that Cascade Fixation KAL? I need to look into that! I just bought my first four balls of it (turquoise) and I want to knit something (socks?) with it. Gotta love elastic! ;-)
Only joins I know are the traditional weaving/darning in the ends one and the spit-splice which only works with feltable fibers. Oh yeah, and if it's ribbon yarn, the Lily Chin trick of sewing the ends together.

Awwww, what a big girl.
Posted by: Patricia at June 15, 2006 09:54 PM
I'm glad there are so many uses for my clapotis-in-progress! Tadpole is so sweet. I love all the pictures of her!
Posted by: Susan at June 15, 2006 08:54 AM
I just used the Russian join on some lace mohair and really like the results so far. I'll let you know if it holds. It doesn't save any time when you sue it on fiber that fine, but it does make the work look seamless, which is nice.
I love the picture of you and Tadpole.
Posted by: Julia at June 14, 2006 02:39 PM
Since you asked...my favorite way to join new yarn is to do it intarsia style and catch the new end in the backs of several stitches and then switch and catch up that tail end in the back but now using the new yarn - it's brilliant - no weaving in ends, and you can do it in the middle of a row so you don't feel like you waste a lot of yarn by doing it all at the edges. I haven't been able to make this work in lace but for something simple with a lot of stockinette - it rules.
I'm so glad to see that your Clapotis gets used and enjoyed - I just love mine.

Amazing photo of Tadpole and the infamous Clapotis!
Love it!!
Posted by: Leah at June 13, 2006 10:30 PM
I was going to say you can try RIT dye on cotton but not too sure of the results you will get because of the elastic. Stove top method is pretty easy. Such a sweet photo of you & Tadpole. Love Tadpole's sweater!
Posted by: KnitPastis at June 13, 2006 07:41 PM
What an adorable picture!
Posted by: Tenli at June 13, 2006 04:34 PM
Ah, so dalring is she! Ingenious idea for the clapotis! Looks great! You look good, dear Kate.
Posted by: Aimee at June 13, 2006 03:21 PM
Cutest. Photo. Ever.
I like Russian joins sometimes, some times felted splicing (on something like tweed) or I just leave long tails at the ends of the rows and use them for seaming. I hate weaving ends in, too.
Posted by: Risa at June 13, 2006 01:37 PM
Yep - Eunny has that great tutorial for joins. And I'd say an *easy* dye job for the Fixation would be RIT since it'll dye cotton. And isn't Tadpole the cutest???!!! I love this post and the Sling-o-tee is so clever. heh Now I know I HAVE to make one. How much does Tadpole weigh now? Lila is just over 17lbs.
Posted by: Laura at June 13, 2006 11:49 AM
can't believe how big she's gotten - cuteness! and how clever are you, showcasing your talents and ingenuity with slingotis!
Posted by: jennifer at June 13, 2006 11:22 AM
Tadpole is so beautiful. I love that you are reinvetning clapotis uses. I'm also awed by the fact that you aren't afraid to use that Lion & Lamb for whatever the need.
Posted by: Gina at June 13, 2006 10:52 AM
Eunny showed a pretty ingenious way to join yarn back in February--one I've never seen anywhere else: http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2006/02/yeah.html
And yes, Tadpole is adorable . . . but you knew that already!
Posted by: --Deb at June 13, 2006 10:38 AM
aw! look at that tongue!
in regards to your "ends" question, nona posted a quick tutorial on how to knit in your ends right after you join. seems like an easy way to take care of them.

That has got to be one of the sweetest photographs ever. Tadpole is a beauty. Love the slingotis, you clever mommy.
Posted by: regina at June 13, 2006 10:00 AM
Tadpole is just gorgeous, and I have to say I love that you use a sling (or Slingotis!) I used slings and pouches when mine were little and they were lifesavers!
Posted by: Rosemary at June 13, 2006 09:01 AM
Slingotis! And the cutest l'il baby face! I don't have any favorite way to join new yarn. I try to join at the edges and leave long ends so I can use them for seaming. Still have ends to weave in at the end but most of it is taken up by the seam.

Kate, I just made two pairs of fixation socks -- one pair of sweet little knee highs for my daughter, and another teeny pair for a yet-to-be-born baby. I finished them with a little picot edge on the cuff. Definitely make socks for the (gushingly adorable) Tadpole. Fixation is perfect for baby/kid socks.
Posted by: Liz K. at June 13, 2006 08:39 AM
Hey aren't you wearing that inside out?
*runs*
Posted by: Scout at June 13, 2006 08:25 AM
I believe I have the solution for the Fixation socks.... you ready to hear it? You can knit ME a pair of socks! LOL! Ok, ok, might not be the greatest of ideas but I thought I'd put it out there. Just in case! ;)
Tadpole, Tadpole how my heart melts each time we are spoiled with a picture of you, show grows too quickly though. ;)

The missing link! you found the very last remaining use for the clap! I'm sure its been used as a nursing-in-public-blanket already....
I've used the Russian Join and spit splicing before. Neither seem to be as perfectly flat as weaving in afterwards, but you know its strong. I acually spit spliced my Clap which really helped (no seams to hide the ends, and you know they are going to work their way out.
Posted by: suzanne at June 13, 2006 07:39 AM
Kate, Tadpole is sooo big! And sooo cute. What a funny little face she is making...
Posted by: mia at June 13, 2006 06:59 AM
Whoa long hair chica....well both of you... (Tadpole has a lot more hair than Felix.) :) You guys are adorable.
Posted by: Sarah at June 13, 2006 05:59 AM
for joining -- i'll do a bunch of different types depending on the yarn. i'm partial to the join where you knit with both yarns for 1.5 inches or so and then drop the old yarn. all you have to do is go back and trim the edges -- no weaving.
unfortunately i've yet to find a single join that works well on all fibers and all numbers of plies. and sometimes, no matter what i try, i have to do the classic one where you go back and weave in.

I think it's about time for a slingotis along........given the number of babes arriving this year, it's a possibility!!
Posted by: Alison at June 13, 2006 03:07 AM
love the slingotis! and that TONGUE! my goodness she's a cutie. of course, saggitarius babies ARE the best ;)
Posted by: jen at June 13, 2006 01:39 AM
(forgot the "hehehehe" giggle after the send a picture to the designer bit.)
Posted by: Sara in WI at June 13, 2006 01:16 AM
What an adorable picture! That tadpole is a keeper! I love the slingotis and think that you should send this picture to the designer. She would be thrilled!
On the joining thingy.....I spit splice wool...it is the best and just never shows...no ends to weave!
Posted by: Sara in WI at June 13, 2006 01:14 AM
Ohmylord is she just about the most adorable thing? What a clever you to wrap her up that way. My sling has finally given up the ghost, so I suppose a knitted one is inevitable.
