I must be the last to post about Rhinebeck
We're back. It was a long, wet ride down and a long, wet ride back, with an absolutely gorgeous day in the middle. You know when you eat a bunch of candy or drink most of a bottle of real, Mexican tequila (not that I've ever done that... ahem) and your head is buzzing? That's what I felt like most of the weekend. It was a blast, but an overwhelming one. Here are some photos and memories:
I wore a store-bought sweater to dinner on Friday and was asked by a stranger in the restroom if I knitted it. It was a warm and fuzzy way to start the weekend, realizing you're surrounded by like-minded people.
After dinner, there were loads of knitters all hanging out in the lobby, ticking off other hotel guests who were dead-set on watching a movie there, rather than in their room.

Irene (the knitter formerly known as Blossom) with her first purchase of the day.

Why I loved Rhinebeck. It's all about the touching.

Tadpole with her first gift of the weekend, a felted ball

My second purchase of the weekend, fiber from Spinning hill. I didn't buy all of that. Just some of it and my pal Paper Tiger Knits, whom I FINALLY got to meet this weekend, bought some too.
These three ladies were only the start. I met about 10,000 knitters this weekend. Maybe more. I'm actually kind of curious so I might sit down and try to make a list. Everyone was lovely. Charming and fun and sweet and smart and lovely. Maybe everyone in the world should learn to knit and spin. It could create world peace.

Frog tried spinning. I think he had almost as much fun as I did last weekend.

Ginger haired girls and autumn leaves

The falling leaves drift by the yarn booths. The autumn leaves (and fiber) of of red and gold...

Baaa

Frog, Tadpole and "Baaaaaab" the sheep puppet.
And now back to your regularly scheduled silence. I have some deadline knitting to finish so you won't see me again until it's done. Wish me luck. I need it.

Oh my goodness, that was me in the bathroom--was it at the Culinary Institute? And you said No, and smiled, and said Are you a knitter? I am ridiculously delighted to realize that I was speaking to the Mother of all Clapotis. That's the greatest. Wait till I tell my pals. (We were sitting at the table nearest you--we sent Stephanie a beer.) Hee. Cheers! --Laine

Rhinebeck looked wonderful.
And Tadpole is just too sweet looking in her little sweater.
And I must ask--WHERE did you get that amazing hat? It's adorable! And my head is getting cold.

Good luck with the deadline knitting, your photos are all great, Tadpole is a sweetie and looking all grown-up already.

Tadpole's sweater looks so good.

I started to make a list of the people whom I spoke to whose names I remembered. I stopped when I got to 98. And I've thought of at least 10 more since then.
108. No wonder the whole thing is a kalidescope in my head.
I actually saw someone walking around out in the world wearing a clapotis recently and I started to speak to her. She looked at me like I was a crazy stalker lady...which perhaps I am.
And I swear there's a commercial now with an older woman KIP while she talks about - insurance? medical care? - and what she's knitting is the beginning of a clapotis.
You are everywhere.
It was an huge and happy pleasure to meet you and Frog and Tadpole this past weekend.
I bought a brown cloche last night, with a pinked edge on its band. Beautiful.

I kept a Clapotis Count and ended up with 25. And I know I missed some.
It was lovely to meet you. Good luck with the deadline knitting!

What great photos of all of you! (We've just gotta get Ms. Irene blogging now...) I'll be thinking of you as I spin my flamy Spinners Hill roving...
Happy (or at least painless) knitting!

You did great, even if you are leaving out something. That Spinners Hill is fabulous stuff. Have fun. And BTW: Will is delighted to have "his" wheel back. Thanks.
Posted by: julia fc at October 27, 2006 09:40 AM
It was so nice to meet you! Looks liek you got enough fiber to keep busy for a while. How did it go with the wheel issue, did the vendor fix it for you?

I love for you to have met more fellow knitters. I think here in GA they must all be hiding under a rock. At least I haven't found that many yet. Sniff. But that's why we have the computer, all the way across the miles.
Posted by: Angelika at October 27, 2006 06:49 AM
Tadpole is freakin' adorable. You and Frog are pretty cute yourselves. This southern gal is so envious of all you folks who got to go to Rhinebeck. Maybe next year....
Posted by: Mary at October 27, 2006 12:38 AM
Your pictures are great, and I'm only a little jealous that you made it down to Rhinebeck, but mostly I'm commenting because it made me feel better to find out that you're not sure how to pluralize clapotis, either. :)

It was wonderful to meet you :o) Tadpole is the cutest! :o)

oh maybe there should be a knit along about knitting so many clapotis that it could cover the whole world if joined. i am certainly working on it! ever since i did my first in september i have had so many people asking me to knit one for them. ideal gift for new mothers as they are both elegant and have something to protect the baby from the cold in at the same time. wonderful for grandmothers as they feel elegant as their daughters. and wonderful for single women 40 plus as men like women who knit almost as much as women in red dresses. great invention. and so very well thought out.

I was thrilled to meet you and show off my jacket! Next time I'll have to wear my clapotis. ;)
And, um, what are you using to spin up that fiber, eh?
Posted by: Katy at October 26, 2006 06:19 PM
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun! You're hair is so long, it looks great! So, Frog is spinning? That's awesome! And comme d'hab, Tadpole is just beautiful!

Sadly I'll be the last to post about Rhinebeck. We got back home late Tuesday night and I have only started to go through my pictures. It was wonderful to meet you, Frog and cute little Tadpole! I saw more Clapotis than any other pattern on the grounds! You must have been awed and thrilled.
Posted by: margene at October 26, 2006 05:06 PM
Holy moley, I am totally jealous. Why didn't I go to Rhinebeck? Uhhhh, I'm kicking myself. I love your photos. Tadpole's sweater is awesome. Irene knit Clapotis in the same yarn I did! I love hers, too. :) And by the way, that sweater you are wearing from your cover of IK is awesome.
So, were you totally accosted in every direction that you went?!?!?
Posted by: Anne-Caroline at October 26, 2006 03:50 PM
Tadpole looks so cute in her sweater! I wish I had seen you there--I was one of the many Clapotis-clad knitters running around. It looks like you guys had a fabulous time! :)

You know, if you only had one pattern per IK issue, you could get some rest. Just sayin'.

Okay, I'm in! Next year I will definitely do Rhinebeck! You look so cute in that hat and tadpole is styling in her sweater. I'm jealous of your fall experience!

You might think you're the last one to post about Rhinebeck but you're wrong. Margene has hardly begun.
Kate I've been just about to cry seeing all the beautiful pictures of you and precious Tadpole and now even Frog! all over blogland. I might have to try going to this deal some day - just watch - you won't be there that year.
Thanks for the great post and wonderful pictures. :)

What a great post! The pictures are wonderful. Ahhhh. Wisconsin is soooo far away from NY. And MD. And VT. And Taos. And Estes. ........
Posted by: Sara In WI at October 26, 2006 01:33 PM
Good luck with the deadline knitting, although I am starting to hope you'd stop designing, my 'Must-Knit-List' ist getting too long, all your fault! Your pictures are very cute by the way. I remember how you've wanted to go to Rhinebeck for the last two years, but couldn't, being stuck in Frogland. Take care, Julia
Posted by: julia at October 26, 2006 01:21 PM
What a gorgeous photo of Irene up top there.
Great to finally meet you. Hopefully we'll have more time next time. The dogsstealyarn clan may need to make a trip up north in the spring.

It was so much fun to meet you and talk with you. Tadpole is even more adorable in person, if that's possible. Thanks for hanging out at my cocktail party! Good luck with that deadline knitting. I personally hate deadline knitting.
Posted by: Carole at October 26, 2006 01:02 PM
And see, you thought no one would know who you were. I guess having the girly in her sweater helped too.....lol Glad you had a good time.

So good to meet you, Kate! Tadpole is just such a love. That Spinner's Hill fiber is delicious -- some of it followed me home too. Hope to see you again soon -- either here or there.
Posted by: Kathy at October 26, 2006 12:31 PM
Nope, I haven't posted either...and I didn't use my camera all weekend. Baaaaaaaad blogger. :-)
Hey, nice sheep puppet...looks familiar. Does yours bite mens' ankles?
Posted by: Lee Ann at October 26, 2006 12:26 PM
I bought a ton of that Spinner's Hill (well, only 2+ pounds). Love them!
It was nice to meet you and Irene and Tadpole at the cocktail party! P.S. Irene needs a blog.
