13 steps for finishing a sweater

1. Sew steek.

2. Cut steek with (surprisingly) no fear and complete faith in the process.

3. Celebrate success.

4. Start sewing it up.

5. Realize that once again you used the wrong white for the button things... no you didn't. Maybe you did. Maybe not. Who the hell can tell in this god-forsaken sunless town?!

6. Sew up the damned thing anyway since the baby is growing before your very eyes and it may already be too small.

7. Try it on baby. IT WILL FIT FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT WEEK! YEAH!

8. Try to get a photo.

9. Try to get a photo.

10. Try to get a photo.

11. Resort to using a flash.

12. Share photos with knitting friends who point out that you used red to sew the buttons on one shoulder and white on the other.

13. Briefly think about fixing it before realizing you would probably screw something else up in the process. Think about baby's next sweater instead.

It is a gorgeous jumper, it really looks cute, and the different colours sewing on the buttons add a nice effect.

Posted by: Annie at October 25, 2006 08:52 PM

Kate: That sweater is just beautiful. And your sweet girl is even more beautiful. Love the photo shoot record. How many times I have been there! "Sweetie, look at mama" try to click, "No no, honey, oer here" click and miss, "Just one time, honey. Can you stand right there for just a moment?" Click -- toll ate. Sigh.

She is just beautiful, what a lovely smile. The sweater is lovely however the model makes it more so...

Posted by: Paula at October 23, 2006 03:30 PM

I really wasn't dedicated to the pattern in the swatch, but seeing it in a full baby sweater. I'm impressed at your vision. :-) How cute! And her eyes are amazing.

Congratulations on being done!! Definitely deserving of an ice cream break.

Posted by: susan at October 22, 2006 01:14 AM

Oh Kate what a gorgeous photo! She looks great, as does the sweater. (Plus I prefer that the buttons have the alt threads...looks intentional.) Great job...but no surprise there.

Posted by: Jennifer at October 21, 2006 01:53 PM

Wowsie, zowsie, that's pretty! Very very nice. And you caught a great photo of the cutie baby girl in the cutie baby sweater. So nice.

YAY!! YOU DID IT!! *applause*
from now on you'll be my inspiration whenever I think I'm not going to finish a project, I'm going to think about this knitting adventure. ;-)

She's SOOO cute and looks a LOT like you! I also love the sweater...but the baby is the best part of the pics! :o)

Posted by: mia at October 17, 2006 07:04 PM

well I have done the same thing with dale baby ull white and creamy white. Mine looked like hell. I solved the problem by making a strong pot of tea. One cup for me, the rest into the sink, soaked the baby sweater in it and presto chango - all the whites were creamy. Yours does not appear to need this - it's way cute.

Posted by: mary lou at October 17, 2006 05:56 PM

I love it. She looks adorable. I'm also digging your designs in the upcoming IK. Lovely, per usual. Did I tell you I finally submitted to them? I did!

Posted by: The Other Julia at October 17, 2006 05:49 PM

Hi, I don't knit myself, I have just been enjoying reading about your adventures. Personally, I don't have the patience for it... I just wanted to say that you do beautiful work - both knitting and baby-wise. She is absolutely gorgeous... And who cares if one set of buttons are sewn on with red and the other with white? She looks absolutely divine in her little sweater - until you mentionned it I had no clue!

Posted by: Johane at October 17, 2006 04:24 PM

Beautiful sweater -- I love it. And the little tadpole is beautiful too.

Posted by: Kathode Ray Tube at October 17, 2006 03:48 PM

Oh, Kate, it's GORGEOUS! Well done, mistakes and all! And the baby is precious, too. Most excellent.

Posted by: Liz Cadorette at October 17, 2006 03:12 PM

Great job, Kate! She looks adorable and has beautiful eyes. And, I kind of like the red and white thread for the buttons- makes it original.

Posted by: andie at October 17, 2006 03:11 PM

From the few pics of you I've seen, she looks a lot like you.

The sweater is adorable! I remember when you CO, and here it is finished. Beautiful.

And the baby? Beyond words beautiful. I hope she brings you joy.

She is beautifuuuuuuuuuuuuuullllllll and I can't believe how big she is. I love the buttons on the sweater and who gives a care about the color thread?
Good work!

Posted by: Rose at October 16, 2006 08:06 PM

That little girl is too. Cute.

Posted by: kristen at October 16, 2006 06:06 PM

Isn't that just the way with some projects? I'm glad you left it. Onward! (P.s. I love the design.)

Posted by: alison at October 16, 2006 06:02 PM

I looove the sweater! and the contrast facings at the sleeve bottoms. And you could simply declare the buttons/yarn a design feature. -- oh, and forgot to say that tadpole is cute, very much so!

Posted by: Lara at October 16, 2006 04:30 PM

Priceless! And I'll bet that if you block the bejeezus out of that sweater, she might could wear it another week or two. Or save it for the next one. Nice work! Precious child.

Posted by: Julia at October 16, 2006 04:28 PM

shes totally gorgeous. and i love the sweater too. :)

Posted by: loanesay at October 16, 2006 04:18 PM

Posted by: Michele at October 16, 2006 02:34 PM

I'm sure I'm the 1000th person to say this, but I am completely distracted by the gorgeous Tadpole to notice which color thread is on which shoulder.

I think the sweater is pretty nifty, too.

Posted by: Michelle at October 16, 2006 02:08 PM

Hello - just wanted to add to the chorus of oohs and aahs over your sweater and baby. That is a truly sweet pic!

That level of cuteness is illegal in at least 4 states and Guam.

Posted by: Nancy at October 15, 2006 09:24 PM

So cute! Will the pattern be available?

Posted by: brooke at October 15, 2006 08:17 PM

I've lurked for a while now. I found your blog through your wonderful Knitty patterns. Your daughter is adorable, and so is the sweater!

Posted by: Pinky at October 15, 2006 07:51 PM

~snort~Think about the next sweater, the red & white button thread just makes it more appealing. Lucky (fast) baby!

Posted by: Carol at October 15, 2006 07:16 PM

Hi I've been reading your blog for a lil while now and am delurking today to say... It's is gorgeous-both baby and sweater!! My baby girl is roughly the same age so I can totally appreciate steps 8-11!

Posted by: roni at October 15, 2006 02:03 PM

Yay, you got a still photo! Tadpole is adorable in it. It must feel good finishing it, steeks and all. I have to do steeking soon.

Posted by: MJ at October 15, 2006 01:57 PM

It's gorgeous, and judging by the size of the sleeve I think it will fit for the whole winter. Congratulations!

Posted by: Luisa at October 15, 2006 01:46 PM

She is adorable! And what a lovely sweater as well!

Posted by: Allegra at October 15, 2006 01:36 PM

You finished! Way to go! The sweater looks fantastic (button thread, schmutton schmead), and Tadpole may in fact be Canada's next top model.

Posted by: alison at October 15, 2006 11:36 AM

Gorgeous baby, gorgeous sweater. Who cares about button thread? It looks great.

(looking forward to seeing you next weekend!)

Posted by: cari at October 15, 2006 11:21 AM

omg....simply gorgeous and the sweater is beuuutiful...:) Both are simply fabulous...

Posted by: Susanne at October 15, 2006 11:14 AM

She is just one of the most beautiful babies i've ever laid eyes on. The sweater is fab, Tadpole is gorgeous (and looks quite happy, which is the important thing). I cannot wait to see her modeling it in-person.

As to the different color stitching, isn't deliberate mis-matching all the rage?

Posted by: regina at October 15, 2006 11:10 AM

Just another knitter saying that your little girl is so. precious.

Posted by: Jenna at October 15, 2006 10:40 AM

I've been following how Tadpole is doing and how the sweater came along - big congrats on both. Both gorgeous, both amazing, both breathtaking - yeah K! Love your post - I understand completely what you say :)

Posted by: Terry at October 15, 2006 10:13 AM

aw! she's a cutie! oh, and just take a red pen or sharpie and color those white threads on the other buttons. no one will know the difference :)

Posted by: gleek at October 15, 2006 09:57 AM

It looks terrfic! And she's such a cutie pie!

Posted by: Kathy at October 15, 2006 09:57 AM

That is, without a doubt, the gosh darned cutest sweater I have ever seen. And the kid wearing it is so gosh darned cute I can barely stand it. Look at those eyelashes! Just LOOK!

Didn't you sew the buttons like that on purpose? The '80's are "back", therefore the asymmetrical look must be in, right?

Posted by: Steph VW at October 15, 2006 09:55 AM

Tadpole is gorgeous, and looks great in her new sweater.

Posted by: Katie at October 15, 2006 09:47 AM

Beautiful sweater, Kate. And very cute little one! Using different colours to sew on the buttons just adds to the character and uniqueness of this stunner.

Posted by: Sharon at October 15, 2006 09:20 AM

So adorable - both the sweater and the Tadpole. And doesn't she look like her mama!

Posted by: Carole at October 15, 2006 07:58 AM

looks great, maybe you could switch the thread after she's grown out of it. then you could blame the difference in the photo on the flash!

Posted by: Mama Urchin at October 15, 2006 07:46 AM

Beautiful sweater, beautiful child -- you've outdone yourself on both accounts!

Posted by: Jen. at October 15, 2006 07:40 AM

Lovely sweater, lovely baby lovely smile!
(my 3year old girlpants liked it too. She said,"I go in there with her and play with that baby." She is our resident baby expert.)

Posted by: suzanne at October 15, 2006 07:29 AM

She is one beautiful babe! The sweater is lovely. Just call the different colors for the buttons a "design feature."

Posted by: Tasha at October 15, 2006 07:04 AM

omg the cuteness! the sweater is fab, too!

Posted by: kris at October 15, 2006 06:56 AM

Sweater? There's a sweater in that picture? Oh, okay, now I can see past your gorgeous daughter! The sweater's pretty incredible, too.

Posted by: Brynne at October 15, 2006 06:46 AM

Very nice sweater indeed! And how cute is this girl!! Is she walking already?

Posted by: julia at October 15, 2006 06:25 AM

The sweater is darling but not as darling at Tadpole! She's beautiful, Kate! I'm working on baby sweaters too, but not of my own design... looking forward to seeing the next sweater.

Bises from paris...

Posted by: Jen at October 15, 2006 04:52 AM

The sweater is fantastic, Tadpole is beautiful and congratulations on the winter edition of interweave knits.

Posted by: Kelly at October 15, 2006 04:12 AM

Oh my word Kate. Would I be a bad mother if I said she's the cutest baby in the world? Okay, how about the cutest baby north of Kansas!!! Oh how precious. How in the world did anybody notice the different colors of yarn on the buttons with her precious little face and beautiful blue eyes staring out from that picture???

And the sweater is magnifique! It must be quite long with that lower section that has her name on it! Beautiful pattern and the colors are so pretty. :)

Posted by: Laura at October 15, 2006 03:16 AM

i just can believe someone would notice about the different colors looking at this photo... she looks so adorable i can't take my eyes off of her! ;)

it's a great sweater.

Posted by: Susan at October 15, 2006 01:25 AM

Hi there. We met last night at Effiloché. I'm glad to see that you finished the sweater and that it fits!
Hope to see you again soon.

Posted by: Amanda at October 15, 2006 01:15 AM

Tell the overly picky folks that you only did that (sewed one shoulder's buttons in red and the other's in white) to see if they were paying attention.

Or just say to them, "Are you *sure*? They look the same to me!"

Posted by: Lynn at October 15, 2006 12:37 AM

don't you just become overwhelmed with her cuteness!

Posted by: jennifer at October 15, 2006 12:29 AM

She is so adorable!!!! No one will notice the non-matching whites, and, if anything, the buttons will be cute, not non-matching. That is, of course, if they can manage to take their eyes off Tadpole!

Posted by: janna at October 15, 2006 12:10 AM

Beautiful. Interchangeably!

Posted by: Leah at October 14, 2006 11:47 PM

Love it Kate! You know - from the pic you can't tell that the buttons were sewn in 2 different colors. But that you point it out - lol - made me laugh. Sorry about not calling last night on the way out of Effiloche. It got late and the two preggers were hungry! So we went for food! I'll be at Mtl Knits in NDG on Wednesday - if you are coming - don't forget the books! :)
