Empty handed?

So I told you about the whirlwind that is Rhinebeck, but I didn't really tell you what I came home with. I was trying to pretend I came home empty handed. I had too much work to do to be tempted by exciting, new (not to mention non-paying) projects. I got my newest knits out in the mail the other day so even though I still have some writing to clean up, I took a little break and spun. On my very own wheel.

A little peek at my wheel

A gift that came with the wheel

What I'm spinning (silk/wool dyed with cochineal and indigo from Handspun by Stephania) and what it does to my fingers

Merino top from Pleasant Home Woolen Co.

A pound of lovely redness (the color's not so accurate) from The Spinner's Hill

Cashmere and Tussah Silk from Foxefire. Frog thinks it feels like Tadpole's hair. The lady selling it touched her head and agreed.

Grafton Fibers

Indigo moon that will hopefully become a sweater for Tadpole.

The only yarn I bought and it's Noro. Silly, no? Frog said he liked it and wanted me to make him something with it. He has never wanted me to make him anything and never liked a yarn for him. I had to buy it.

By buying a wheel, I blew my budget to smithereens, but if I had had an unlimited budget, I would have bought a lovely spindle and I wish I had hit a couple of booths earlier on. And I wish I had bought more of the red stuff. And there was some yarn at Saska Designs that I really wanted but didn't get because the last thing I need is more yarn that I won't have time to knit. And I would have liked to get some other sorts of fibers to spin. And I would have liked more undyed fibers. And that Hanne Falkenberg Mermaid sweater kit that Irene bought. I'd like one of those too. Greedy, I know. Oh! And one of the last barns I went to had these needle organizers. I really should have bought one. That was dumb of me. Does anybody know what company that was? I didn't even take a card.

If you're interested in the Mermaid kit, I highly recommend buying it from overseas as it is much cheaper. My husband bought mine from Cucumber Patch (http://www.cucumberpatch.co.uk/hanne_falkenberg.htm) last year for Christmas, and it seems most people agree that she is great. Also, check out the Hannealong at http://hannealong.blogspot.com/ as there is a spreadsheet available and lots of helpful tips.

It sounds like Rhinebeck was...ummm...profitable, as far as stash acquisition goes. Congrats on the wheel! You'll definitely have fun with it. By the way, I love your last couple of designs that have been published in IK. They are gorgeous!

Posted by: Teri S. at November 11, 2006 09:18 PM

It was Crippenworks... I even have the flyer still!

Somehow the fiber you didn't buy is always more interested in what you did buy. (Speaking as a woman who has spent her car budget on fiber this month!)

I've kind of got a crush on your Equestrian Blazer, but I'm also smitten with the Arwen Cardigan. As usual, beautiful work! And Tadpole is, of course, adorable in all the Rhinebeck pictures.

Got my IK today: Congratulations! Two designs in one issue that's great and I love the Arwen Cardigan. It's beautiful! It's going to be my thank-the-gods-the-holidays-are-over knitting.

Being at Rhinebeck made my head spin. I wish I would have bought more, I'm so jealous of your fibery haul!

Posted by: elizabeth at November 4, 2006 04:28 PM

Beautiful. Some great choices...you'll have fun I am sure.

Posted by: Alisha at November 4, 2006 03:23 PM

You have sooo much the same tastes as I do! Congratulations on the adoption of the Schact! Will you be naming her? My wheels have names!

And Interweave Knits just came.....what can I say? You are just brilliant!

Posted by: Sara in WI at November 4, 2006 02:13 PM

great fiber choices!!!

if you ever find out the name of the needle organizer peeps, be sure to give a shout out; i didn't come across them that weekend, i wish i would have, as my needles are in a state. oh, poor needles.

Posted by: pippi at November 4, 2006 12:47 PM

Wow Kate--great choice! I have craved one of those gorgeous Schachts since they first came out--in the 1980s!!--and still don't have one (should have bought one back then; it was a lot cheaper!) because I alreay had 2 wheels, an Ashford and a (brand new then) Louet S10.

Of course, I haven't touched either (nor my loom) in the past 20 years, since my first kid was born; so you're doing very well!! It is so terrific that all this, like knitting, has become fashionable again.

Posted by: SusanSW at November 3, 2006 02:54 PM

That purple stuff from Stephania is totally worth stained fingers....

Posted by: Juno at November 3, 2006 02:31 PM

Congratulations on the new wheel - I love my Schacht and only wish I had more time to spin! It looks like you bought some gorgeous fiber too...

Have fun!

Posted by: Marie at November 3, 2006 02:19 PM

Congrats on the new wheel! And that fiber is so gorgeous! I especially love the Daffodil Merino Top.

So you did get the Indigo Moon batt! Yay! I think it will make a great sweater. How's the Matchless treating you? Still being a pain?

Posted by: Cheryl at November 3, 2006 07:40 AM

Nice blog....enjoyed my visit....wonder if you had heard the little trick about rubbing your knitting needles with wax paper now and again when knitting a fiber that wants to give off color. Keeps things from staining. And also be sure to rub them down well before you start a new project.

Posted by: Old Knitter at November 3, 2006 07:13 AM

Is this -- http://www.crippenworks.com/ -- the vendor? She had beautiful needle holders. I love the fiber that you picked up -- are you loving the wheel?

Posted by: Kathy at November 2, 2006 10:18 PM

I just wanted to tell you that my IK came today, and I LOVE the Arwen cardigan! And it makes me hate all the Christmas knitting I have to do first...... (The Equestrian Blazer is nice, too, of course.)

Posted by: janna at November 2, 2006 09:20 PM

Yummmmmmm pretty pretties!

Posted by: scout at November 2, 2006 08:44 PM

For your first go round of spinning, I think you did very awesomely. A pro already. All those fibers make me drool, not that I don't already have enough or anything.... I have some photos for you from rhinebeck saturday night, email me and I'll send them along.

Posted by: Julia at November 2, 2006 08:10 PM

Oooo, you did very well. The wheel must be working well. We all have a little buyers remorse for what we had to leave behind. There was so much great fiber to be had!

Posted by: margene at November 2, 2006 07:59 PM

You got a Schacht?! DUDE!

Posted by: cari at November 2, 2006 07:31 PM

The scarf I was wearing was spun and knit from that Indigo Moon colorway. And I bought the same stuff as you from Grafton and Foxfire. hunh.

Posted by: Carole at November 2, 2006 07:16 PM

Yay! You have an El Matchador too. I love mine, love him to pieces and now I'm saving up for a wooly winder.

You must be on top of the world right now.

Posted by: Marnie at November 2, 2006 06:55 PM

Great wheel choice. You'll love the Schacht. I have the same pale yellow merino top and I have some great stuff from Indigo Moon, so I can vouch for those, too! Happy spinning!

Posted by: Julia at November 2, 2006 06:44 PM

Been lurking for a while. Congrats on your new wheel.

Mermaid is gorgeous, I love mine, you can get the kit at half price in Europe.

Well, that'll keep you busy for a while. Very, very cool!

Posted by: regina at November 2, 2006 05:33 PM

Are you referring to the needle organizers that hang on the wall off of a wooden dowel? I have the card at home, if that's the one.

Posted by: Shelagh at November 2, 2006 05:30 PM

There's something wrong with wanting more than we can get/use?

Posted by: Carol at November 2, 2006 03:55 PM

Are you telling us you wanted half the fiber you saw? I would. Good thing there's self control! :)

Posted by: Kathy at November 2, 2006 03:36 PM

Congrats on your two designs in the new Interweave Knits!

Those fibers are gorgeous!
