You'll never believe it

1) I felted the original clapotis by accident. It's still soft, but no longer drapey. Let's not dwell on that. Shit happens and so does felting. There are more positive things happening so let's look at those.

2) My sister's here. She's improving my life by painting my toenails and doing dishes and amusing Tadpole. And I'm trying to improve her life by teaching to knit. She actually asked for it. One of the first things she said to me was "Can I knit?". She didn't even care about knitting something. She just wanted to knit. I finally convinced her that a hat would be more fun than another garter stitch swatch. She learned to purl in 2 seconds flat and is happily magic looping her way to a 2x2 ribbed hat in RY Soft Tweed.

3) Believe it or not the Lise booties pattern is almost done. And it comes in adult sizes. If all goes well and the tech editor and test knitters give me the thumbs up, I'm hoping to have the pattern online tomorrow... Monday at the latest.

Above you see one on the foot of my faithful model, Tom, whose feet are actually much too small for this size. Tadpole. who has the right size feet is asleep (also a good thing). When she's awake and in a nice modeling mood, I'll take some better photos.

Update Above is my lovely foot model playing with her Dress Me Elmo*. Do I need to tell you about the technical superiority of the new incarnation of this pattern versus the old one? It's SOOOOO MUCH BETTER. The heel is better, the stripes are better. The toe is better. The cuff is better. You should be happy it has taken me two freaking years to finish these damned things. It may have been more than two, but we'll just pretend it was only two.

4) I'm in between deadlines so I actually spun for 5 minutes the other night. I'll post my progress one of these days. It's on the list of things to post.

*He says "Let's finish getting dressed!" but it really sounds like "Look! Spinach getting dressed!" I won't even tell you what her firetruck sounds like it's saying...

Very cute booties! These would be adorable on my Munchkins!

The new Knitty.com has the perfect projext for your sister. It's a hat, but not a hat. A little less. It's a headband, but not a headband. A little more. It's cool.

Gasp.
Thank you for that very mature perspective on felting. I actually cried when one of my sweaters went into the laundry unexpectedly.
I hope all is well!

So sorry to hear about your beautiful clapotis! Speaking of which, I just started knitting one this evening. I have been knitting for about 4 years now, but only just graduated from the extremely simple (hats, scarves, other rectangular and tube-like stuff) to cabling and working on my first sweater. I was wondering, what is the purpose of knitting through the back of the knit stitches in the clapotis? Is it just to remind you where you will ultimately drop the stitches? Or is it something more important? Thanks for your help, and love the site!

I think hats are such a good idea for beginning knitters. I've seen a lot of people (myself included) make scarves as their first knitting project, but that can get boring pretty quickly. Hats are so satisfying and then they don't have the time to become afraid of circular knitting.

Those booties are so cute! I think I'll make a pair for my most recent doula client's baby.

am i wrong to dread the imminent coming of the talking toys?

Posted by: kaitlyn at December 8, 2006 08:39 AM

Nooo, not the original Clapotis, that's museum material... :-(
Oh sorry, I won't let you freak out over it.
It's just yarn, no biggie, pieces of sheep...
By the way, I see great buisiness oportunity here; I'm going to be a speach therapist for toys! ;-)

The sockies are really cute. :) I like the stripes especially.

My hubby has been wanting a pair of your booties for ...well awhile. I can't wait it buy.

Posted by: wendy at December 7, 2006 10:54 PM

heh!! The booties! Too CUTE! :)

We have a doctor Elmo. When he says "Elmo has a boo-boo on his foot!" it really sounds like "Elmo has a bubble on his butt!"

Great bootie!

That firetruck wouldn't happen to be the one that sounds like it's saying "Let's light fires!" Ours does. Promoting job security for fire fighters?!

i was going to say the same thing as kathy. man you're a good looking family.

nice bootie too.

OMG I gotta have one of those. Not Tadpole - she's yours, and I DO have one - but the Lise booties are AMAZING! I made two pinafores, love them both, and am excited to see the next pattern.

And I'm absolutely inspired by your collage of DD. She's gorgeous, and the colors and face angles work so so well. I'm inspired to make one of my own.

Oh, Tadpole is sweet...

John has Dance and Shout Elmo that says "Be like Elmo and shout!" but it sounds like "Beat up Elmo and shout!" If it weren't a gift from his great-grandparents (who have earned the right to buy the most annoying toy in the store simply by being over eighty), I think Elmo would have left the building by now.

We have an Ernie little piano that says, "Rock the house" and sounds like "What the hell?"
Love the socks!

Posted by: AmyH at December 7, 2006 04:33 PM

LOVE the booties, and I especially love that I'll be able to make a pair in my size! Yay!

Posted by: beverly at December 7, 2006 04:03 PM

So how do i con Cari into making a pair for me? I'm sorry about Clapotis, but glad to see that you've recruited another knitter. Your sister sounds like a real keeper.

Those booties would be perfect for my daughter's first Christmas! In fact, just today I cast on for some long pants that will double as a wool soaker and the color will match those booties perfectly! I hope I'll be able to whip up a pair before Christmas!

Posted by: Elinor at December 7, 2006 02:36 PM

Yippee on all accounts (including sleeping Tadpole).
; )

Posted by: Vicki at December 7, 2006 02:28 PM

(okay...and a matching pair for me too. And maybe for Billy too. A family of elves?)

Posted by: cari at December 7, 2006 02:24 PM

Oh, I'm SO making a pair of those booties for Thumper.

Posted by: cari at December 7, 2006 02:23 PM

Love those booties.

Yay!! new knitter!!

I'm sorry about Clapotis, but I am soooo happy that the booties will be online soon (and yay, adult sizes!!)

You guys must have an adorable gene in your family :-) Painting toe nails and taking care of the baby are terrific qualities in a sister. RIP Clapotis.
