Nope, I'm not dead
Just busy. Here's the news:
Rember the cruise I was telling you about? The dates and length and price have changed. And it's leaving from NYC. So, hey, all you NYC ladies I adore, come along! I get a little panicky when I think about the classes I'm going to be giving so come and be a nice audience for me, ok? We'll knit. We'll spin. We'll pretend it's 1977, feather our hair and order fancy drinks near the pool. If Frog comes along, we'll call him "Gopher." Cruise info here. Call Patricia at 888-286-9827.
The new class schedule is up at Effiloché. I gave a socks class a couple weeks ago. We made these mini-socks so we could try out all of the techniques in a 3 hour class. Later that week, I got a photo from Marianne, who was in the class. I love it. Here it is:

I also had a really cute photo of Marianne with the mittens she had made after taking the mittens workshop with me. Unfortunately, I can't find it so you'll just have to believe me that both Marianne, and her striped mittens, are adorable.
I'm currently working on mittens and a sweater. And as usual, I can't show you. Maybe you'll get a little peek another time. I'm too lazy to do creative photography today. My spinning wheel is sitting in the office feeling very neglected. I'm thinking about it and reading a little Alden Amos while waiting for the day I'll actually have time to spin again.
Take care.

oops
Two of the rows in the heel of my sock worksheet were reversed. It's been fixed and it's here if you'd like a new copy.

Let's go to Winnipeg!

On the 3rd of January, I finished the first sock. Yesterday I finished the second. This is a record for me. The last pair of socks I finished was TWO YEARS AGO! It was incredibly satisfying to finish a project for myself and to finish it so quickly. At the same time, the whole time I was knitting these things I kept wondering WHY I was knitting them. I have projects I should have been working on. Also, my sock yarn stash includes Fleece Artist, Artyarns Supermerino, Koigu, Celestial Merino and hand-dyeds from Scout and Mama E's c*eye*ber fibers, yet I was knitting Regia (not to knock Regia. I like Regia. I just wondered why I wasn't using something more luxurious when I had it at my fingertips. Regia Silk, even.) Canadian Color [sic]. Before you ask, I think this is Manitoba #4737. I made them top down. And I was so nervous about running out of yarn that I ended up with a decent amount left over. I even thought about taking out the ribbing on top and knitting in the other direction to make them longer, but I realized that would probably never finish them if I did that. I also considered making some socks for Tadpole with the leftovers. We'll see. My fleece artist is calling to me. I'll worry about the left overs later.

What does January 1 say about the year?
Hopefully nothing. Hopefully a lot.
After 8 hours of sleep (!) and doing some, but not enough house cleaning, I tried spinning for the first time in a while. I did a sucky job. So I tried plying. I didn't like the resulting yarn, but instead of saying, "Hey, I don't like this yarn. Why don't I stop here and try another way of plying?" I kept going because I didn't want to waste the fiber (as if having ALL of the yarn be something I don't like was somehow better than getting rid of just some of it) and in the hopes of emptying a bobbin to spin something "fun" (a.k.a. "new"). I got annoyed before it was done, stopped and ate a chocolate (yeah, I know). Then, I got some not so great news about a project I hired someone to knit (I'm trying to delegate to relieve stress and increase sleeping opportunities) and was so worried I ate more chocolate. Next, I decided to do a little mindless knitting on a sock while I considered my options for a project I really need/want to get going on. When I started working on it, there was about an inch of ribbing. Now...

I "just until the next color change"-d myself through the heel, then I had to face facts and go to sleep.
So if yesterday is any sort of indication of what 2007 will bring, I hope it means I'll have time to spin and knit just for the joy of it (regardless of the product) and that projects will zip by more quickly than I expect. Or it might mean that nearly everything I do will be crap and that I'll be so frustrated and nervous that I'll go and stuff my face with chocolates.
In other news - Here's the only Christmas knitting I did.

Frog has big feet. They fit pretty well in the foot, but he has cankles-from-hell so they're a bit snug in the ankle. Ripping will be done. Plus, he's whining that he'd rather have "slippers" than socks. When he explains what he wants, it sounds like he wants socks, but he insists there is some sort of a difference. I think it's just a question of how high they go on his leg. This is the yarn Frog chose at Rhinebeck.
