January 02, 2007

What does January 1 say about the year?

Hopefully nothing. Hopefully a lot.

After 8 hours of sleep (!) and doing some, but not enough house cleaning, I tried spinning for the first time in a while. I did a sucky job. So I tried plying. I didn't like the resulting yarn, but instead of saying, "Hey, I don't like this yarn. Why don't I stop here and try another way of plying?" I kept going because I didn't want to waste the fiber (as if having ALL of the yarn be something I don't like was somehow better than getting rid of just some of it) and in the hopes of emptying a bobbin to spin something "fun" (a.k.a. "new"). I got annoyed before it was done, stopped and ate a chocolate (yeah, I know). Then, I got some not so great news about a project I hired someone to knit (I'm trying to delegate to relieve stress and increase sleeping opportunities) and was so worried I ate more chocolate. Next, I decided to do a little mindless knitting on a sock while I considered my options for a project I really need/want to get going on. When I started working on it, there was about an inch of ribbing. Now...

I "just until the next color change"-d myself through the heel, then I had to face facts and go to sleep.

So if yesterday is any sort of indication of what 2007 will bring, I hope it means I'll have time to spin and knit just for the joy of it (regardless of the product) and that projects will zip by more quickly than I expect. Or it might mean that nearly everything I do will be crap and that I'll be so frustrated and nervous that I'll go and stuff my face with chocolates.

In other news - Here's the only Christmas knitting I did.

Frog has big feet. They fit pretty well in the foot, but he has cankles-from-hell so they're a bit snug in the ankle. Ripping will be done. Plus, he's whining that he'd rather have "slippers" than socks. When he explains what he wants, it sounds like he wants socks, but he insists there is some sort of a difference. I think it's just a question of how high they go on his leg. This is the yarn Frog chose at Rhinebeck.

Hi there. Just wanted to stick my head in and wish you a happy new year. Have you been able to do any more spinning?

You know, it's OK that you made crap yarn. A) I bet it wasn't as bad as you think and B) that's how you get better. I made crap yarn for over a year. Hell, I still make crap yarn. It's fun though.

Cheers.

I just wanted to let you know that you have inspired me. I now have the goal to design my own patterns and have them published. Your tadpole is a doll! Happy knitting!

I can barely manage the drop spindle.

Your photographs are wonderful. Perhaps that says something about the coming year.

I'm with Amy. Spinning, knitting, chocolate, and sleep? I'm not even a spinner and I could hang with that.

Bonne Annee Kate! That is quite an impressive list of patterns that you published in 2006. I am sure 2007 will only get better. And hell - A CRUISE! That is awesome. How was your x-mas? Let's catch up some time this weekend - you around?

Sew some leather soles on them and fold them down to make them shorter and call them slippers, maybe?

Glad to hear about the sleep and the knitting/spinning time. Wishing you much more of that.

At the risk of sounding like a character from Finding Nemo - just keep spinning. It will get better. You might never spin plied sock weight yarn, or who knows, maybe that's all that will come from your wheel. But know this - you are a freaking design goddess.

Hmmm. Sleeping. Spinning. Chocolate. Knitting. The bad news about the project isn't good but I'm thinking the other stuff outweighs it.

Perhaps he wants what I call "house socks." Loose, heavy-weight socks. You gotta love that -- worsted weight, size 7 needles or some such. In other words, FAST. :)

If it's any consolation to you, i cannot ply to save my life. Some day, perhaps, but until then i'll just be in awe of all the natural-born spinners out there. xo

I'm so glad it's not just me with the cankles. Although, I suspect the Frog's cankles are all muscle, and not inhabited by the larvae of alien creatures as I'm sure mine are.

any day that includes knitting, spinning and chocolate even with a little frustration mixed in can't be all that bad--can it? Sounds like a great way to start the new year!

Posted by: Amy at January 2, 2007 11:06 AM

Ha! I do the same thing, keep on going even though I know it's sucking because I don't want to "waste" fiber. It's hard to admit it's not working and move on to something else.
I hope the time for yourself trend continues in the New Year, and not the everything turning to crap trend.

All I saw in this post was that you got 8 hours of sleep! It's a New Year's miracle!!!
