Seven discoveries

1) When you're making a toe-up sock and you don't like the toe but don't want to trash the big chunk of foot you've already done, it is possible to cut off the old toe and graft on a new one. It's not even as complicated as it feels with all of those needles everywhere.

2) When you think you are doing something kind of cool and that you should definitely blog it, you're about to get smacked down by your own stupidity because...

3) Double count your stitches before taking the time to cut off, knit and graft on a new toe. When you get to the last few stitches and realize you have 6 too many on the toe, there's not a damned thing you can do besides just start over again.

4) I like heel flaps better than short row heels, though I believe not all short rows are created equal. Because of this (as well as other problems) I started my sock over working top-down. I had already turned the heel and was part way up the leg, but I want to be happy with my work.

5) I like working toe-up better than top-down because I can't stand not knowing if I have enough yarn to finish the foot and I hate having extra yarn left over. I had tons and wanted to make the second sock toe-up again.

6) Sometimes my desire to sleep and lack of time actually wins over my desire for perfection. The top-down sock was finished and the toe-up abandoned.

7) (Courtesy of Tadpole) Mom wasn't kidding. Playdough isn't for eating.

Tadpole looks a bit like Dame Judy Dench there, no? :)

That is a priceless expression on Tadpole's face. Live and learn, girl!

I loved your post - it was timely, because I have just discovered that the second sock of the pair I am knitting has a foot 1 inch too long. Since I had already done the heel, I decided to finish it anyway. Now I have to steel my nerves to cut the toe off, frog a few rows and then graft the toe back on. I should be able to do that hmmm? I will wait until next weekend when I can do it in good light. Wish me luck!

Cute tadpole pics!

I am hopeless at grafting but I will keep this in mind for future reference.

You know, I still remember what Play-Do tastes like. eeew. Such cute pics. :)

Ha- don't you just love the learning process...

Being a toe-up lover as well I'd like to try the socks that Jen commented about..

That face - those toddlers, learn by doing. I think my little guy is around the same age - July 23 is his birthday, what that would make him, 20 months? So sad - I had to write that down to figure it out.

Your daughter is super cute - even when she's not happy with what she's tasting ;)

I've never tried short row heels, but I really like the way they look. I've been meaning to try Alison Hansel's short row tennis socks for ages now.

Good luck with the rest of your sock!

That's the same face my sister got when we told her not to eat the root beer lip balm and she took a bite anyway. The imploring "but it had such potential" eyes get me every time.

I'm with you on the toe-up socks, but a toe has to be seriously fecked before I try to take scissors to it.

Oh it is too cute the last photo...my 2 yrs old boy wants to meet her personally:-)

6) oooh yes.
7) ahuh.

Tadpole got hair!!

That last picture is the best. Was this Play-doh (tm) or play dough that you made yourself? (Do you have the receipe for play dough? If not, I can give it to you.)

Sorry about the sock fiasco. I'm contemplating similar surgery for a pair of favorite socks my daughter returned to me with a hole in the sole ... I will heed your warning and count the stitches carefully.

hee-hee

Oh! My goodness. That last picture is PRICELESS.

Posted by: carrie at March 16, 2007 04:34 PM

hah i loved the taste of playdough when i was a kid. maybe they changed the formula since then. :)

Posted by: Lindsay at March 16, 2007 12:42 PM

Aww, little TadpolePoo! Yeah. That's in the same category as crayons. Washable crayons are... uhh... different. They have a way different texture than the old fashioned waxy crayons - they smear all over Lila's face like she's eating soap or somethin - Ugh! heh

Oh the fun and folly of sock knitting. Just when you think you've got it all under control.... erm. :)

My daughter ate play dough the other day too... only she likes it! Now she rummages through her toys saying, "pay dough, pay dough, pay dough." I'm going to have to throw that stuff away.

Oh DEAR! Words to live by.

Hey, have you ever tried a toe-up sock with a gusset and short row heel? There's no flap, but it fits me LOTS better than a plain old short-row heel. I mostly wear my socks with clogs anyway.

Check it out - starting at the point where the sock just hits the intersection of your foot and ankle, increase 2 st every other round on the bottom only until you have about 30% more stitches. Then turn it like a normal heel flap heel. The turn goes on the back of your heel instead of the bottom. It's pretty groovy.

Ok, firstly, Tadpole is too funny. I know exactly how she feels, but her expression is just priceless. I do love that instead of swooping in to save her from herself, you photographed her. I somehow think this is a more memorable lesson this way. Ahhh, when she's 14 and brings home a boyfriend, you will have this to show him. ;)

Some lessons you learn the hard way.

Hey! That comment could apply to the sock or the playdough. How handy.

Great picture of the Tadpole.

Posted by: Sarah R at March 16, 2007 09:34 AM

She is such a cutie! At least the playdough is non-toxic. =) She probably disagrees with me though.

Sorry about the sock. I am knitting my first ever toe up and have run into some serious issues. I do like the fact of being able to knit until the yarn runs out, but you have to be able to get your foot in the dang thing.

Posted by: Tonia at March 16, 2007 09:28 AM

Haaa. That picture is PRICELESS!

I'll be around later today if you want to call.
xoxo

Humility is learned from so many places. My knitting constantly reminds me that I am perhaps not so smart as I think I am!

Priceless photo of Tadpole - I think my dad has a picture of me doing the same thing when I was Tadpole's age. (I can't remember if it was before or after I stuck a round leggo up my nose and had to go to the doctor to get it removed.) Ahh, kids.

Posted by: meg at March 16, 2007 08:04 AM

Tadpole is just too cute. She still saying "NO" all the time? Sean just started sleeping through the night! I feel like a million bucks again!

Posted by: Robyn at March 16, 2007 07:06 AM

I have some Cherry Tree Hill that until now, I've considered too precious to use, but I just read about toe up socks that used a heel flap, so I think I'll give that a try. I don't want one bit of that yarn left over. Maybe enough to fix any holes.

That expression on her face is priceless!

Posted by: Jenn at March 16, 2007 06:56 AM

Look at that face! (Sorry about the sock.)

Posted by: Kathy at March 16, 2007 06:28 AM

haha poor little tadpole...

Posted by: maryse at March 16, 2007 06:19 AM

Oh Kate, she's so beautiful, playdough face or not. How precious.

Posted by: AmyH at March 16, 2007 05:41 AM

I've just recently found out that I hate doing toe up socks because I like doing the heel flap but using all the yarn you have is a great thing... someday I'll get ballsy and go toes up but this toe grafting thing you are talking about is just too radeical for me, Kate.

Yes, Playdough is on the list with glue of things that just don't taste good to eat, Tadpole. :) Her face is precious!!!

4 days, kate! I can't wait! WE gotta get our kids together, who knows... what could ensue? :)
