Oh Goody

Grrrrrrrrrrr. I had typed most of this post and then a lovely little girl came to help and hit both apple and Q at the same time. I've now retreated to the bedroom to be alone for five minutes and everyone has ended up in here anyway. Grrrrrrrr.

The knitting here is pretty boring right now. Lots of swatches. I guess for now, NoF will have to be a spinning blog... spindles on fire?

I've finally committed to going to Rhinebeck this year. Are you going? Will you say, "hi" if you see me? I was thinking about what sort of purchases I might make and was thinking about what I bought last year. Out of the seven fibers I bought, I had completely spun one, mostly spun one, played with one and started spinning one. That left the cashmere/silk, the grafton fibers batt and the bag of red fluff untouched. When I bought the grafton fibers batt, I had a specific idea in mind (which you'll most likely see soon..ish) but I'll probably need another yarn (or fiber to make that yarn) to complete the project. Rhinebeck would be the ideal place to find that fiber/yarn but it would be easier to carry around a ball of yarn than a batt, so I spun it up.

Here's what it looked like last year (and a couple days ago it looked much the same)

I ripped the batt into strips and then realized I had no room to put the strips in order and no way to keep them in order so I came up with this

Tadpole's barrettes were the perfect way to keep it organized. Wool is hair after all.

And spun up and plied it looks like this

It's not my best spinning ever. And I got kind of annoyed with a problem I had and then just wanted to get it done with and spun worse and got more annoyed and spun worse and so on. It's probably a bit overplied in places, but that's what I get when I navajo ply.

Back to swatching and project planning.

Your spinning looks great to me, but what else is new? And I am totally planning on going, and on saying hi.

Posted by: Lucia at September 24, 2007 05:01 PM

I have every intention of being at Rhinebeck, and I'll certainly say hi.

Posted by: Ruth at September 18, 2007 11:08 PM

Ooh, I *hadn't* seen this post. But I'll say hi to you at Rhinebeck. :)

Ingenious way to keep your roving sequence straight. Navajo plying hides a multitude of spinning sins. And then knitting with it they are hidden forever :-) Love your center pull ball and the graduation of colors. Can't wait to see you at Rhinebeck and the finished product!

this whole spinning concept, to me, is a total and utter mystery of wonder! you take one beautiful thing and magically turn it into another separate and new beautiful thing that can then become many beautiful things! i always thought i was a good, standard intermediately-skilled knitter. but somewhere along the way while i put down my needles for a few years, this whole explosion of knitting tricks arrived on the scene. i wonder if i will ever catch up!

I love that! I think it looks great. :)

That's a cute idea, with the barrettes. If you need more, I've got a stash left over from when my girls were little.

This will be my first time at Rhinebeck, and I can't wait! I'm actually on a no-stash-enhancement diet right now to prepare.

it looks perfectly spun to me - and the colors look wonderful! You did a great job keeping them straight!

I'll be at Rhinebeck and I'll say hi - I promise :o)

I was dreaming of going, but there is just too much going on this fall to make it... I have not touched the bag of red fluff either, and I haven't looked at the rainbow batt. (Yeesh! I need no more fiber or yarn!)

Had to laugh at the barrettes. What a great idea though.

The spinning reminds me if Noro. Very lovely.

Lovely colors. The barrette idea is great.

I will definitely be at Rhinebeck--although probably not wearing my sunrise circle jacket this year. ;)
However--your new lovely yarn looks very familiar to me; check out this blog post:

I want another batt, too!

I'll be at Rhinebeck, and I'll be sure to say "hi". Can't wait to see what you make from that lovely yarn!

This year is my FIRST Rhinebeck WooHoo!

beautiful colors! and the skein looks perfectly spin to me ;)

Oh I wish to be going, but alas no, it is a bit far.
Your spinning is gorgeous, what a cute batt and yarn.

I've *almost* committed to going to Rhinebeck again... if I'm there and I see you, I'll definitely say Hi!

Posted by: Sarah at September 12, 2007 11:06 AM

I think your spinning looks great! If you want to feel better about it, I could show you the results when I spin a Grafton batt. ;-)

Posted by: Carrie at September 12, 2007 10:40 AM

I'm SO happy you're going to be at Rhinebeck. I know I'm probably dreaming, but I kinda hope we find time to actually sit down and -- dare i say it -- have some coffee and get to talk face-to-face?

Posted by: regina at September 12, 2007 10:39 AM

I wish I could come to Rhinebeck but my one friend who has a car and knits is getting married that weekend and selfishly wants to go on a honeymoon. I wonder how long it would take to walk from Ottawa?

Posted by: Amy at September 12, 2007 10:37 AM

If by "come and say Hi" you mean "Oh my God! KATE GILBERT!" then, um, maybe? :)

Posted by: Elspeth at September 12, 2007 10:35 AM

I'm wishing and dreaming I could be there. That batt is so enticing. I might need to bribe someone into getting a batt or two for me. Hope today is a better day!;-)

Posted by: margene at September 12, 2007 10:34 AM

I'll be there. And I wouldn't miss the chance to say hi. I might even hug you, too, so watch out!

Posted by: Carole at September 12, 2007 10:18 AM

As a wise woman told me, if you want perfect yarn buy it. Spinning yarn is an art, it's suppose to be what it becomes! ;) I think it looks terrific and I'm curious to see what it will be knit into. :)

Posted by: ~Jo~ at September 12, 2007 10:06 AM

I suppose I'll come say hi.

;)

I'm ready to start knitting.
